Worked with this guy in Qld. Known to all as "Showbags" Had to be carried and full of C**P.
His wife was fairly high in the Dept of Transport and he managed to get a job as a "Scalie" Transport Inspector.
Within six months he was infamous and had threats of a violent nature made. They had to transfer him to another area and I was told he ended up in a desk job after more threats in that area.
Not a liked position, but wouldn't it be bad if some of those poorly maintained trucks with bad brakes stayed on the roads.

Yes, I not in favour of poorly maintained vehicles. 1975
My funny experience, I was on my way to Adelaide across the Hay Plains when I needed a rest break, another truck was there and as you do we said hello and from there I followed him via a back road to my destination. At meal breaks and tyre check we talked not a lot, he told me thing had not gone well for him over the few years, spent time in jail, didn't tell me much and I didn't ask. He did the right thing around me and thats what counts.
About 18 months latter I have loaded timber out of a bush saw mill near Dalby for Sydney weights can be a bit hit or miss and no weighbridges check for 80ks, Had breakfast near Moonie the next morning the roads are quiet about 1 hour down the road I get pulled in by the Qld Weights and Measures, guess who the Inspecter was.
While he looked at my book his partner when for a walk, as soon as he got down near the end of the trailer he told me to go and don't look back.
Funny as, I still don't know how I would of went with my weights, my book was not to bad, truck was OK but they didn't handle that side of things.
I dislike somethings.
