Two days ago I stopped at Clearview to have lunch, it is listed in Camps 9 as having 24hr free camp & dump point. The dump point is closed ("tank cracked according to a local") and has being for some time. The pull over area is blocked by concrete blocks, mens toilet had a blocked and leaking urinal and I lost count of the No Camping signs which even extended to the other side of the railway line.
For a community that has no commercial business other than the Barracamp Caravan park and in this day and age it was unusual to find such a place with a closed and anti nomad vibe.

Where is Clearview? Google brings up the mirrors there is a sburb in aadelaide, not having a shot at you but too many times members mention a town or location but no state.

I just wonder what the benefit would be to this place to have a freedom camp, when the only commercial enterprise in the place is a caravan park?
How will the camp help the CP or the surrounding community?

If this post is regarding Clairview Queensland then it is somewhat out of date. The free camps at St Lawrence, Clairview and Carmilla were closed back in 2014.
This from the council minutes of their October Council Meeting -
That Council adopt the following:- Amend the Camping and Coastal Management Plan action list for Coastal communities to the following recommendations: Reinstate camping on identified designated locations in Carmila and St Lawrence at a fee of $10.00 per night (maximum period of 14 nights) with the fees to be included in the fees and charges schedule for the 2014/2015 Financial Year; Signage contrary to the above needs to be removed and replaced with appropriate signage as a matter of urgency (prior to the next Ordinary Meeting of Council). Endorse no free camping on public areas at Clairview.

Belongs to somebody. Council or private.
No matter where it is. IF freeloaders. Free Campers. call them what you like.
use any of them.
Either the private owner. or Council. would have to send somebody round at least once a week.
To cleanup the mess. these (I never did) freeloaders leave behind.
THAT costs money. Time, and fuel.
WHY should they give it to you for zilch
and that's even if they don't supply a tap or power, or dump point.
Would you (they\whoever) smile if somebody fronted up and parked their van on your front yard. draining sinks etc on your grass.
Then disappear in the morning "NOT" leaving any rubbish behind.
AND NOT PAYING ANYTHING..
Be real people. NOTHING is for free.
pay for the service and smile.
Otherwise. there won't be too many services left in another few decades.
I've been travelling this country for 40 odd yrs.
It HAS changed a lot regarding camping and parking.
The way modern people are showing such little respect for it.
And multiplying while doing so.
There will soon be a lot less to use.
THEN.. Regardless of how well set up these huge vans are.
There'll be nowhere to go. BUT caravan Parks.
Watch them all smile then as they trot off to the bank each Monday morn.
The Van Park owners.
People NEED enlightening sooner than later.
FREE. Go out BUSH.. AWAY.

I agree with you Macka. Over the last year or so I have seen places that used to be free camps either closed or turned in to something resembling a scene from that movie "The Grapes of Wrath". There was a time when one could pull up for the night and share a stop with fellow travellers and enjoy the esprit de corps. These days it seems the norm that when one pulls up, some control freak is there with areas marked off for their expected friends to arrive whilst the head of the mission cranks up his generator so the little wife will not to miss Home and Away in air conditioned comfort.
If this is not enough, at sparrow's the next morning about a dozen diesels fire up like General Patton's tank command whilst some loud clown delivers his itinerary for the day as if he was commentating at the wrestling. When one feels it is safe to go outside, one sees mud everywhere from the dumping of water with the bins full and all the extra rubbish stacked up next to it, just waiting for the first gust of wind or arriving feral animals to spread it everywhere.
I have just about given up on free camps near popular places, especially if they appear in Camps or on Wiki. I search out my own and then keep them to myself. There are literally heaps of these. I take my rubbish away with me and dispose of waste water properly. Sadly, it will soon be all caravan parks or highly regulated areas as the only places left.

Recently I was talking to a truckie on the pacific hwy. This guy was probably 70 & about 65 kg.
He told me he pulled into a "truck stop", about 10pm, as he was due for his regulation stop. He pulled in near a caravan & stopped the truck.
A guy got out of the caravan & threatened to pull him out of the truck & punch him out for waking him up.
There's a lot of people out there abusing these facilities who will stuff it up for everyone
I can see why small communities want vanners to stop in their area. I can also see why they don't want them.

New to this site and have been caravaning for only a couple of years. I agree with the above and would have no hesitation (and have done so many times in the past) in paying $10 -$15 for an overnight stay. In fact I wish there were a lot more! That way councils would be more likely to make places available with water and a "long drop" so long as it was not unreasonably competing with an existing park business. I also notice that quite a few caravans tend to park in the truck area despite clear signs pointing cars and caravans to another area. I remember last year near Charters Towers staying at a roadside caravan and truck stop; at 10pm a refrigerated truck turned up (refrigerator going all night) and then a cattle truck pulled up at 2.00am (cattle moving and mooing all night). My wife and I just had a chuckle and said that's life on the road. DMaxer seeing as how I agree with you 100% how about PM me with the "heaps" of places :):):)LOL.

We wont know for sure till the OP come back on , But the caravan park in Clairview Queensland is called Barracrab caravan park .
I had been using the Clairview, Qld Lions park stop overnight for years, and now just driveon by as its been getting less friendly as time goes on. I have stayed in the cvan park also, and can tell you its pretty average. If the people and the van park don,t want my custom, I will just go somewhere else. Its as easy as that. There are BETTER PLACES just down the road, and the I will tell anyone who asks, not to go there. So much for local tourism.........

Bill (and others) ... I guess it has been missed - or misunderstood - but the action taken by the Isaac Council back in 2014 at St Lawrence, Carmilla and Clairview is BECAUSE of so-called TOURISM.
It has been the continued abuse by 'TOURISTS' over many months that forced the communities, and consequently, the council's hand. The continued absence of requested donations to defray upkeep was also a contributing factor.
The 'collective we' are responsible for these closures - perhaps not you and me personally - but those who have abused not only the rest area but also the community that made their facilities available.
I am sure members of this and other forums are not likely to be the ones who continue to abuse these facilities all over Straya - but members of this and the other forums are a very minor number of those who travel this wide and beautiful land.
The 'free-loader' society will be its own executioner and the general traveller will be the sufferer.

Morn'n Rocky "and others" I remember the first time I visted and stayed at St Lawrence, I was green to so called 'free camping' or low cost camping, not set up properly etc. I picked a spot for a one night stand only then had a look around, found the donation box next to laundry door, not knowing anything about these things asked two people standing near by how much is the going rate? "Nothing mate" "It's been there forever but not used". Me being me didn't believe that and decided to put $10.00 in the box.
These days I tend to put $5.00 for one night if no water or power as that seems to be the going rate and appreciated by the authorities or similar groups.

The free camping at Bingara NSW on the banks of the Gwydir River is large, very popular and is well looked after by the campers, no facilities at all but a dump and water point in town, the Information Centre says that around 15 to 20 grand a month is put into the town by the campers as they collect receipts so considering not all would deposit their reciepts thats not bad and something the local business's rely on and the van park is always well attended as well............why anyone would stop at highway rest stops is beyond me, as a truckie I hated stopping at them, highway runners have always been grubs.

We had no choice last night but to pull into a truck/car road wayside on the Gregory highway. Long distance travelled that day and fatigue set in. A very large area to accommodate many vehicles including road trains. Being in the middle of nowhere, there were no rubbish bins and the amount of rubbish was astounding! This is indicative of the dark side of humanity.

Why have rubbish bins if they are not emptied ? If I pull into rest stops . Some states have van and seperate truck stops . Stuart H/way for example . I try to look around on
Pulling in ., Find a spot and STOP asap if there's other people there . Especially if it's dark or late evening . Not that we stop too late ? We usually like to find a place around 4-5 pm before it gets dark ., Then strangely you get people who want to sociable and some just keep to themselves ., It's the back packers or the type who poop, and leave toilet paper as a sign they've been there ! The Nallabour is a prime example . Why so few stuff it up for everyone ??

A lot of places on the QLD coast have been closed or had fee's and other restrictions imposed mainly because of Backpackers and long stay wanderers, ruined it for many.......I know I live in one of these areas and while I don't like a lot of the no camping and other restrictions the places are a hell of a lot cleaner than before....I always found Clairview QLD to be a horrible place to overnight in the truck, get eaten alive there.
