We are considering making Canberra part of our next big trip (this time next year). When I look at wikicamps I see very few caravan parks. From the wikicamps comments most are overpriced and not very nice.
Anyone with experience of Canberra, and a few hints on which is the better caravan park I would be pleased to hear from you.

Wikicamps is correct Canberra overpriced - We stay at Gunning they have a very nice donation camp, fantastic cake shop. It is 70 klms from Canberra unhitch and day trip - the saving in CP Fees more than compensates the fuel for drive to Canberra plus you can help out a small Highlands town with a heap of history on it's own.

I know some wouldn't but I reckon set up at Jugiong Showground, 1.5 hours NW along side the Hume Hwy but quiet. 7 day stay.
You can crank up that Ford of yours early and have breaky with Big Mal, then spend heaps of time in the War Museum. Should have time to vist the big kindy as well mate.
Not far N of Jugiong is Young and Cowra, highly recommend Cowra. Call into the visitor Centre and check out the display there. Too good to miss.
On another day you could whip across to Wagga Wagga for a ganda.
The Ford might need a rest by then.

Depends on what you want Phil. Exhibition Park is not too bad. There is also Queanbeyan Riverside Park that people seem to like. Apart from that, there are a couple of camps down south in the NP that I think are quite cheap or what about the Wee Jasper area.

Bungendore showground great camp host , less than 1/2 from Canberra. check out wiki camps.

I think the post was about Canberra not every where else.
Exhibition Park (EPIC) $33- powered site. North Canberra same area as Saturday Weekly Canberra Farmer Markets. Extensive area, safe and secure. Also, access to one of the fastest growing areas in Australia called Gungahlin.
While the caravan parks/accommodation is expensive, you are in the Nations Capital and have available to you "free" entry into some of the most recognised and National treasures in the country.
The War Memorial, The National Museum of Australia, Parliament House, Old Parliament House, The Mint, Film & Sound Archives, The National Gallery, The Portrait Gallery, The Arboretum, and extensive shopping precincts on both South and North sides of Canberra. Take a drive to Telstra Tower, Mount Ainslie, Stromlo Observatory and then Tidbinbilla just to name a few.
Don't think you would manage to achieve half of the above list from outside the Capital.

June in Canberra will always be cold. But love it or hate it being price/location etc ...Exhibition Park is the only place to stay to visit Canberra. Sure it is expensive and depending on the site you get depends on if you are happy or not (just like any other CP) but simply put...jf you want to visit Canberra them I personally recommend Exhibition Park.

Friends of mine have recommended the Exhibition Park to me, and they say that you can catch the bus into town
If I ever go to Canberra again, (no plan to do so at the moment), that is where I shall stay

It is now $35, rates went up on Jan 1 - Camping at Exhibition Park in Canberra. There are good maps under the "Getting here" link on the RHS of that page. If arriving unannounced I would park the rig first and then walk down to the office to pay. I think all the regular events that close the campground are over this year but for future years check on the main EPIC website for closures.

Hi folks
Thanks for the responses, very much appreciated. Still not sure what to do but Im thinking of parking the caravan in from of BS castle and using the lawns as a dump point (only joking).
The prospect of staying out of town may be acceptable to us as a day trip is good for us and the mighty Ford will eat the miles up with ease (Dougwe!)...

Sorry Peter , you are not correct the rates have not gone up yet. If you follow your link you will see that that the rates will go up on 1st July 2017

Sorry about the late response presently other end of the world,, may I suggest as of low cost experience not far from the Canberra, Gundaroo Sports Ground.
We stayed there about 20 months back and I have read since they did some extra improvements to the area to make it more inviting. Was very peaceful.
Another camper told me he had stayed a few nights at Bungadore Showground just east of Canberra, that is second hand information.
May I also suggest ACT Nudist Camp, Kowen booking required. Apparently quite warm there.

WE stayed at Gundaroo oval last year(was very wet) but was still pleasant. Only 30mins from Canberra and a nice bakery on the way there or back :)

We always stay at Eaglehawk Holiday Park, at Sutton, just over the border into NSW. It is not cheap, and the place is very geared to bus tours of school groups. But it accepts dogs and has sites that will fit our Coaster. It is a very large park. We try to get one of their 4 ensuite sites - away from the rest of the park, and pretty quiet. It is a convenient location - can go down the Madura Road to get to a lot of Canberra's attractions.
