The consumer watchdog has confirmed that motorists in Cairns in far north Queensland are paying too much for petrol, blaming a lack of competition for pushing prices up.
In WA, diesel is always far dearer than the various grades of petrol, despite diesel being the least expensive product to refine from crude oil. About 2 years ago a BP executive over here admitted that it was because most of this fuel type was used in commercial vehicles and the costs passed on the end user (the consumer of the goods carted).
For example, yesterday unleaded was 108.9 in our part of Perth metro, but diesel stayed at its usual price of 1.37.9.
I now use 7/11 as they don't have huge ups and downs in the their prices with queues out on the street of motorists desperate to get a "good" price. My local 7/11 diesel is always 1.25.9 and sometimes drops by a few cents. They use Shell fuels - the same as Coles Express and a few others. Puma used to be cheap over here - but now usually up there with BP with the highest prices

Here in Cairns we have always known that you can get diesel cheaper at Cardwell
or even Speewah than here and they have to transport it from Cairns to get it !!!

A couple of years ago the same situation was happening here in Newcastle (probably not as big a mark up as what you are saying is happening in Cairns), the reason given by an independent watchdog was that the fuel companies were subsidising a fuel discounting war that was going on in Sydney. This suggestion was publicised and as usual the fuel companies denied they would ever do anything like that all of a sudden the prices started dropping and became more comapatible. You always expect to pay a little more than the capital cities due to the extra transport costs involved but being ripped off so someone else can get a discount is a little hard to swallow. It wouldn't surprise me if the large regional population centres such as Cairns were being used to subsidise fuel prices in Brisbane.
I guess this is called a conspiracy theory and may be well off the mark.

The cheapest Diesel fuel in the Perth area, is in the Eastern Hills district of Chidlow,
$115 cpl ,, If heading East, it may be worth your while to do a short detour off Great Eastern Highway into Chidlow, you could save a bundle !!
