Hi all, I pulled into Fremantle today and am here until Wednesday then I'm heading north. Any suggestions for your "don't miss this" in Fremantle and Perth lists and also on the way north would be gratefully received. I'm not sure how far up I will go but I'm looking for warm days and nights too. I may end up going over the top or just hang fire somewhere warm and then come back down the west side with work at grain receival sites in the spring as I've not yet seen the south west corner. I'll see how the money and work situation goes. Any other nomads in this part of the world - it would be nice to meet up.
Cheers, Andy

IMHO the highlights of the north would be the Ningaloo Reef (Coral Bay and Exmouth) and the Karijini national park in the Pilbara. Oh and don't miss the Murchison Gorges at kalbarri. It's a nice trip going from Horrocks Beach (north of Geraldton) to kalbarri via the coast road. The Kalbarri Cliffs are spectacular. Some of the stations up there are good to stay at. Wooramel and Bullara are very good and a reasonable price.

There is so much to see and do around Freemantle you are spoilt for choice my particular favourite of all time is the "Maritime Museum of Wrecks". There is heaps of info and exhibits on the Batavia and not to be missed is the electrolysis reclamation of an old engine that was taken off an old shipwreck - could spend days in that place. In my opinion Freemantle better than Perth with shops/markets/cafe's, attractions.

I am led to believe that there is a submarine, at/near the Maritime Museum, it is on my list of places to see

As possum said the Batavia exihibition is really interesting as was the tour off the old Fremantle gaol if you're into the historical stuff. Years ago when we lived in Karatha a trip from Whim Creek out to Millstream Homestead via Pyramid Station and Python Pools was always a good way to spend a day. Alternatively call into to Point Samson for a seafood meal and visit the old ghost town of Cossack the turn off is at Roebourne.

I too found the tour of the old Fremantle Jail very interesting. Would have been horrific for the inmates who were interred there.
Cheers, John.

Lots to see and do in the greater city area.
We are 70kms north of Wanneroo on Indian Ocean Drive..well a couple of kms inland from the road!!.. you are welcome to call in here for a coffee and or stay a night or two. Can visit Discovery Centre (telescopes), Moore River Inlet, Gingin townsite, Lancelin. An hour from the Pinnacles and an hour and a half to New Norcia. Plus fishing along the coast,4wd-ing or just chill out after surviving the city areas.
Check out the Seabird thread in Get Togethers to be held at end of Sept.
Pick a time and place for a coffee catch up and post it on here and see if you get anytakers..we are always up for coffee!!

You're not kidding BB, that sent chills down my spine. Probably made worse too, by the commentary of the tour guide.
Cheers, John.

Well Perth was quite a pleasant city as far as big cities go and had some nice attractions like Kings Park and the Mint. Also has an excellent public transport system.
Fremantle, though, absolutely charmed the pants off me. I could actually live there!
(it was actually kind of fun walking round town without pants until I got arrested ...... )
