No madaboutled, it's not but we did it a couple of weeks ago with our bird club. We (BirdLife Townsville) call the trip the "Mingela Loop". It is a gravel road but there are no issues other than in places it is narrow & steep. Care has to be taken because occasionally some "locals" may think they can do what ever speed they think is (in)appropriate!
The road actually brings you out at Clare (in the Burdekin Valley).
Sights to see - Ravenswood, a gold mining town with two historic pubs (a number of years ago I had the biggest hamburger at the "Imperial" that I had ever had); the Ravenswood Show Ground where camping is permitted by the caretaker (a small fee), the Quartz blow (not far out of town) on the road to Clare; the council quarry where you may see a Jabaru (we did, along with other birds), as well as Clare. As you approach the Burdekin area, the road is sealed.
Happy travelling!

It's sealed once you get closer to the top of the range (& on the odd creek crossing).

Oops, we were coming from Ravenswood! So yes, sealed to just over the top of the range.
