I virtually always rough camp in deep bush and therefore dig my own latrine however I'm currently following a caravanning friend as he and his wife travel to some very out of the way places in west NSW, SA and WA.
They are mainly using campsites from Wikicamps and after receiving a Spot message from him I like to look up where he is staying however one thing which has intrigued and mystified me from the Wikicamps comments is toilet paper!
It seems a considerable number of people who use these bush campsites and are fortunate enough to have a proper toilet facility at some of them also expect plentiful toilet paper provided for their use. Do they also expect table cloths on the bush tables, I wonder?
Does *anyone* actually go into the bush and *not* take toilet paper?

They walk among us and yes some do think it should be available.
I sprung backpackers a few years ago helping themselves to paper from a free camp toilet. He was rolling it off the tamper proof holder onto a bottle if I recall.
Others have been caught years ago taking whole rolls.

This is not necessarily a Backpacker misdemeanour. I am certain if you ask any Caravan Park Manager about Toilet Roll Theft you might be amazed to find the thieves mostly have Dinky Di accents.

This post just begs one question in answer to the fundamental elemental thing, What the hell did people wipe the nether regions with before paper was invented? I guess a good washing be another alternative! Can still dig a hole and sluice the privates down! I have run out of the ready made, improvise and think about hygiene!

In my old shooting/hunting days I've been known to use a variety of leaves.
Just watch out for stinging trees or those other broad leaves with one side like sandpaper.
Of course the finger hole through the middle of a zig zag cigarette paper and then using the paper to wipe the finger as you pull it out is an old one too. Cures biting your fingernails.

My other post must be floating around in cyberspace, or perhaps in the wrong topic somewhere
I think that most of us carry spare rolls, as they always come in a pack of more than one roll
I have in the past gave half a roll away, to townies travelling by car, when they entered a roadside site to go to the toilet, and found no paper available
I told them to keep it, as we were in an area, where I doubt that the service stations, sold toilet paper

Like the folks have already said, leaves we around long be for the newspaper and toilet rolls.
And we survived.
When I was in retailing I recall one old lady only wanting white toilet rolls as she did not want to pollute the water with the colour dyed toilet rolls.FACT

Particularly in the Middle East it was, still is in many places, the custom to use the left hand to clean oneself which is why the left hand is not used for eating and especially not for taking food from a communal dish.
A lot of views of this thread but few responses... do we have some "paper complainers" on this forum I wonder...? :)

Gday...
If you note almost every post gets hundreds of views but very few replies.
Many viewers are not members (or even active members) so are unable to provide comment.

John those numbers may be correct but are they an accurate picture as members can visit the GN site without logging on ? I log on if I wish to make a comment on something that I find interesting or maybe check if I have any PMs - sometimes I can be logged on for hours/days only because I forgot to log out. Although I did read this thread I didn't make any comment because I didn't consider toilet paper to be as valuable a commodity as some. The way I see it is that in today's pampered society not having any maybe be a little uncomfortable but it's not really a life threatening situation especially if you're out in the bush. Best solution as Tony suggested would be to carry your own supply then you shouldn't have a problem.

Don't care. I don't use public toilets.
Though it reminds me of a rukus at work one time. Worked in a car dealership and overheads (like TP) were allocated over the various departments. Big argument because it was said the mechanics use a lot more T paper than the office staff therefore the service department should foot most of the bill. lol.

Well, toilet roll theft indeed is rife in our community. I have been accused of it myself on more than one occasion when seen carrying a roll of dunny paper out of a public dunny because I always take one in with me to make sure. The ones who often accuse me are older GN's with big rigs who are fully self contained. Sorry, no slur intended. I do ask for an apology after showing them a six or twelve pack with a couple of rolls missing after returning from my mission! I have yet to have a response of sorry! But as Ned said, "Such is life." Now to crawl under my rock and avoid the flak!

I've heard this mentioned many times but possibly it's become a 'throw away line'. Surely they use water as well or some other method of cleaning the left hand also what if the person is left handed?

There isn't much water in most of the Middle East - most of it is desert so not many leaves either.
>also what if the person is left handed?
The Badw and Arab cultures are not ones which allow misfits to shape their behaviour. A left handed person (obviously blighted by Allah for a good reason) changes his bad ways or pays the price.
I lived there - it ain't like it is here :)

Did a bit of research and apparently they use water splashed by the hand etc and consider the use of toilet paper to be disgusting! When you think about it if you walked in someones excrement you would not just wipe it off - you'd wash it off thoroughly. When you read about why they don't use toilet paper it makes a lot of sense.
Israel is part of the Middle East but apparently they use toilet paper.
