We're newbies, googling the basics of an upcoming trip in our new campertrailer from Perth to Melbourne across the Nullabor. Interested to hear about any special places to visit, caravan parks, free sites etc (apart from the obvious and well-known ones), including off-road. Many thanks from Norman & Annee.

We plan a Nullabor trip (Adelaide to Perth to Coober Pedy & home) in the next few months, so I will be watching this thread with interest.
If you don't already have it, get Wikicamps. Books, one of the Camps (not sure the number we are up to) and Boiling Billy's are good. Also check out roadhouses; in smaller places with lots of space in between many will have a pull-up area, either free or for a small fee/purchase.
On our trip Roma to the Barossa (arrived 15 days ago) Wiki was a saviour.

There is plenty to see accross the Nullabor. We took 6 weeks Norseman to Ceduna first time. Good free camping areas at very regular intervals. Just stop at every little area and you will be surprised when get a 100 metres or so off the road.

Plenty of free camps, the recognised ones and the ones you will find yourself
Agree with villatranquilla, Koonalda is worth a look, track must have improved since we where there

When I go to a new place, I try to find the local Tourist Info place, as the locals always have very good knowledge, of their area

Thanks to everyone for really helpful tips. As we're two addicted photographers, can't wait to get our cameras to Koonalda Station. Nice pics, Jenny & Barry. I can see from all your posts we might take a LOT longer to get across the Nullabor than we originally guessed! We'll also be taking Woolman's advice and exploring those "off-road" opportunities too. Wondering what the mobile phone reception is like across the Nullabor? Friends did it a decade or more ago and had a satellite phone for emergencies, but I'm thinking the reception spread is a lot better today? Or should we have a satellite phone??

In one of the service stations there is a home made, advice type paper, stuck on the wall

Welcome Annee, lots of good info to be found in here. Another tick from me for Wikicamps, it has the benefit of user reviews on most camps & CP's. If you want the books, Camps 9 and its sister Caravan Parks Guide (up to 5th edition now I think?) are good to have.

By the way, as a novice to campertrailering (the new Princess Barbie Campertrailer is presently being customised...), I bought a thermal cooker at Aldi yesterday for $80, as I nearly passed out at the price of them elsewhere. I'm keen to try it out, as we love stews, curries and soups, as well as braised shanks or ribs. Does anyone here have any experience with thermal cookers?
