Didn't replace it for fours years and as a result rusted out HWS and $1300 later :(

Because they're already fitted to the van when we purchase. And changing the anode every year takes less time and cost than preparing a good meal. In my opinion the HWS would never be a deal breaker.

we check ours every 6 mths especially and carry a spare - sometimes it will last a couple of years depending on water quality and mineral content other times shows signs of electrolysis at 6 mths

We change the anode at least every year - though if we have been in areas with lots of bore water, we may do it earlier - the last one was not that badly corroded, but was pretty well coated with the "white stuff" whatever it is, that eats the anode away.

Hi Doug,
Our Truma HW in our Campervan is the 14lt model & has been faultless over the five years since installation.
On our yacht we have an on demand gas hw unit flued through a dorodo vent on the cabin top. It has an adjustable thermostat that appears to work by limiting water flow to increase the heat. We run it at max for washing up water etc. & on setting 3 for showering which is great because we don't have to waste water out of our 400lt tank to get the right temperature for showers - it has been faultless over our 20years of ownership.
I don't know your type of HW unit but perhaps it might be worth trying to see if the water is hotter if you turn the tap on less to limit the water flow.

Doug i had the same hws as you now have,got fed up also,being either scalded or frost bite,i did look at a truma as a replacement for mine,but the unit is too small in physical size for the cutout of the girrard,where as the suburban is the same width and height just a little deeper.easy fit. cheers Ray

Hi Ray, yes it is a Girrard, you must have seen some previous posts about this stupid hot water system. I have been to supplier in Melbourne without success, I have run a new hot water pipe direct from hot water service to shower without success, water is JUST warm and that's it. I have also tried the reduction in pressure using mixer tap without success. The redirection of direct water was the thing that surprised me the most. It only goes width of van with nothing inbetween.
Time to bite the bullet I reckon. Later this year at this stage it will happen. I have thought of the Truma one talked about above but not sure. I have also had the Truma continuous flow one suggested as very good but I think I will just keep away from those too.

Carry spare n check every time before heading off . First bought the Van the anode was 70% carked after its first use . Bought two spares online and replaced the bad one with the new one 85% still good after two years..

The "white stuff" is what's left of the anode after it has corroded in preference to your HWS. When I changed mine for the first time (second-hand van), it was all white stuff... I suspect it's zinc or magnesium carbonate, or something like that.
Using rainwater reduces the rate of corrosion, but of course that's not always available.

And when checking or replacing, do members hose out the tank? I checked mine yesterday - don't think it had been cleaned before! The socket I used was a borrowed 1" & a 1/16th AF. Is there at close metric one? 26mm, perhaps?

Thanks Bill for your assistance, I managed to get an AF socket from SuperCheap for a dollar!
I am going to replace my anode in our hot water system. Been 2 years since it was last done, so I am expecting the old Anode to be well used.
If your are on the road a lot I have read where it pays to replace the anode every year.
I guess that it is part of the annual maintenance program.
