Hi Umpie1, if you get yourself a copy of 'Wikicamps' for under $10 and put on your phone or laptop, if you haven't already, there are about 24 listed for Gregory Hwy between the two towns you ask. Well spaced too. I have not stayed at any because I did the trip in one go.

This question is often ask on this forum always very hard to give a full answer , If you are on the road and want to save a dollars you first have to spend a dollar , Take note of what Doug has said in his post .

Umpie1 - there are three "rest areas" between Clermont and Charters Towers.
Cape River - 112Km south of Charters Towers. Really just a 'rest area' nothing there but toilets ... and close to the road.
Belyando Crossing - a roadhouse of sorts. Very expensive fuel, passably acceptable 'take-away food', expensive camp - some power sites, no water. A power site would cost $30 ... un-powered $15. The un-powered sites are not very level and just acceptable. Toilets.
Belyando South - a parking area 31Km south of Belyando Crossing - just a patch of dirt close to the highway.
My opinion from a few journeys on that road ... and only stopping at Belyando Crossing Roadhouse ONCE .... fill up at either Charters Towers or Clermont depending on the way you are travelling and do it all in one day.
I would also echo the advice of others. Buy the Camps 9 book, or Wikicamps etc and you won't need to ask for outdated info on the forum and you will be in a better position to better plan your journey to meet your own needs.

agree with John's post,but i would also add there a long section of that road that has had the bitumen laid over a ploughed paddock...or seems like it

Yep to both rockylizard and warhorse only we thought the road had been laid over a inland ocean near got sea sick.
Belyando crossing give a miss unless desperate. There are plenty of places you can pull off the road for the night if
you like to free camp.
