We have done ok with real estate in Sydney . Have two investment properties . Thinking VERY seriously of selling and purchasing a acreage up north NSW . We look after our grand children which are now all going to school . The other grand mother which we get along with really well rents one of our rentals . We'll be renting our main house out . We feel torn between what we've always wanted to do if we could "afford" ? Thing is the family would love visiting as the acgreage we are looking at all has cleared and bush with stream through it . 5 to 50 acres . About 4 hour drive from our family and home ., Are we being selfish ? We'll still be spending most our time traveling in our motorhome . Another reason on purchase is to have storage for my toys, motorhome and garage . Height restrictions etc here in the big smoke .

I think if you ask your family they would say 'Go for it'. Afterall it's not like you are that far away. When I asked my daughters about selling up and going on the road full time, they said, "dad, we want you to be happy not your money".
I still see both daughters and grandchildren. I stay in my caravan on my daughters property in Townsville and when at Greens Lake, nth VIC I drive 4.5 hours to see my other daughter and grandson then 4.5 hours back, in one day, nowhere to stay there. It's all worth it.
So AK, I reckon all will be good, go for it. You are not being "Selfish". IMO.

Simple - AK loves travelling in his motorhome but still has a home base and family responsibilities similar to many other travellers. He's just tossing around the alternatives....and sharing them. That's my take on it!
Good Luck.

The time of life that we are currently in (mid 60's) is not the time to be changing residences or buying real estate. How long have we got left to enjoy it if we buy it?
We enjoy our home (updated) adjacent to Port Phillip Bay as we have for the past 40 years. We also enjoy 6 months per year away exploring Oz.
We see lots of tempting properties on our travels that we could afford but never do anything about them mainly because of the ''we're not going to live forever'' factor.
Have a think about it, it makes a lot of sense.

Read my first post . I have sold investment realestate in Sydney . So property is not an issue . I've run dairy farms years ago. Although Aust bush cerually looks after itself . Still have the place we built here . I'll rent out as income . I'm still active . Need room for my toys to work on etc . When or if I give that up ? I'll be going to nursing home . My Dad trained his race horses to his 70's .i have along way to go . Our kids have had assistance way on there way owning their home .

As this is an "I digress" segment I assume posters can digress to topics away from caravans.
No problem.
By the way...aus-kiwi. You only live once.

For us the short answer to your question is NO!
If your children or anyone else is trying to stop you following your dream then it's them who are selfish.
Your an adult and by the sound of it a very intelligent one at that, follow the dream. You've got it all worked out.
Cheers and good luck.

Main reason is to have barn and workshop etc . The motorhome sits outside when not in use . I'm still keeping ( renting out ) our main house in Penrith . I have lived most my life in country, run dairy farms on my own . It's no big deal for us. It's just the city has taken over where we are now . It's no more drama . Acreage looks after itself . Well the bush does . Just make sure house is clear of fire hazards in bush fire conditions . The building regs don't let me build a garage high, large enough to fit the motorhome and a few toy cars . . Plus property out here is more than half the price .Hunter Valley is hardly way out bush . I still want to keep active .mind and body . Go up north or overseas for the two or three months through winter .

AK I guess it depends where in the Hunter Valley your property is located but 4 hours to Sydney means that it must be in the upper hunter somewhere. The area to the west and south west of Sydney is only going to get worse and in coming years building the second airport at Badgerys isn't going to help. At least moving up this way would give you the best of both worlds - a lot less stress and you could be back in Sydney or the family could be at your place within a reasonable time. With the property boom that is going on retirees who own their home in Sydney have a golden opportunity to sell up and buy their dream property somewhere else and probably still have change in their pockets - if it was me I would be taking advantage of it. At the end of the day you and your other half will have to make the final decision about your future don't let your family do it for you.
Cheers BB
