I am seeking to buy a slide-on camper or Jayco Swift camper to suit my 1996 4WD 2.8lt Diesel Toyota Hilux tray top utility. It has a tare weight of 1530 and the tray size is 2.5m long x 1.8m wide. hi gwynnie and welcome,i seriously looked at a slide on,even fitted rear airbags,then i started to think about weather i could spend any extended time in one, short answer "no" so i ended up buying a 2nd hand pop top,best thing ever,the other thing to remember,besides limited storage with a slide on, if you want to sight see your slide on goes with you,pain to take off all the time....my choice would be the jayco camper,much more room,easier to live with. enjoy the forum cheers ray

Thanks for your input and I must say I am leaning towards the Jayco Swift 'off-road' Campermyself too as you say it certainly has more room & storage. I can put a couple of site boxes in the back of my ute for further storage. I have just spent nine months circumnavigating around Australia (28,000 klm) in a 22' Motorhome and was spoiled by the roominess inside the vehicle. However now I want to do more 'off road' inland trips, hence the change of vehicle. Have fun & thanks again. Gwynnie

Slightly off subject . I saw a top slide on up in Darwin with extended chassis or bed. The axle looked like it had been extended further back too . Top bit of kit . Don't have pics unfortunately!! Yes the light trucks we get here are a little small or short ..

I'd go to some caravan parks in Adelaide & see if there are people with similar set ups & ask them why they chose that outfit (both the camper & the slide-on).
I have friends who have similar outfits (Hilux, Land Cruiser utes & slide-on campers) & they are pleased with them.
I suppose the big advantage is that if required, they can tow a trailer/boat.

Thanks Warren never thought of doing that, grand idea to visit the van parks, after all the travellers there are on the road and understand the good/bad & the ugly of both rigs.
