Looks like you'll be looking for a roadside gravel pile by the number of replies you've received. A very popular ''touristy'' stretch of coastline. Probably like the great Ocean Road in VIC, no free camps to speak of really.
Have you ever considered pulling off into a State Forest track for the night & using a Porta Loo? We do it regularly. No problems.

I'm with Keith on this one I haven't come across any free camps in recent history a few showgrounds that are a little cheaper, as for rest areas caravaners are generally treated as campers if you pull in for a snooze, some have said they were persuaded to go to a tourist park for the night, but if it's late how are you going to get in? Or worst to keep going when tied, which is not on.

yes thanks guys ,it seems that no one ever travels the pacific hwy now days or if they do theydont free camp,im not going to camp just stop for the nightto resr as the man saysdont drive when you are tired.im always amazed that some offical would think that when towing a van that when we stop for the night to rest we would do it in the car when we have a very comfortable bed 4 metres behind .

Try the Ulmarra show ground. Turn east off highway into Coldstream St. I have seen RV`s parked their for the night.
Ulmarra is 13 Km north of Grafton on the Pacific Highway.

Halfway Creek servo, nth of Woolgoolga
Little Itali south of Woodburn.
Both have lots of road noise as transports rush though the night.
Wiki Camps aps have a couple of low cost showgrounds or recreation areas on the back road from Coffs Hbr. Nana Glen.
We have the need to travel the coast road each year, shutter at the thought of stopping with the continual traffic noise, so we head into showgrounds off the highway.
Grafton, Kempsy, Wauchope, Morisset, Mullimbimby, Murwillumbah all good. Mostly priced around $20 a night.
Not fussed on Maclean they don't love there showground.
Hope in some small way this may help.

Just remembered another one a bit of the highway notth of Grafton near the hotel at Lawrence $10 to the leukaemia Foundation.
The ferry could be a bit scarey with a caravan but in my other life I towed frigerated pans over the ferry.

Sorry can not answer that question as I was not interested at that point in time, more interested in getting job down.
Try for high tide to be sure but other then that slow at a angle. Ferry guys are use to amateurs just arriving.
