Hi all.
We will be starting our trip around Australia next month starting from Caloundra on the Sunshine coast. but we're not sure now what to do because of the damaged done by Cyclone Debbie. Whats your views on this?

I am around your area as we speak TA and will be heading north in approx 3 weeks so would expect to get through without any problem really. Keeping in mind all places effected by 'Debbie' will not be at their best. The local authorities are saying even now, "please don't forget us and come visit still". If you come across a damaged or flooded road still just go around a different road if possible or sit it out. A lot of places will be cleaned up and open for business by then.
Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

Having been through a severe cyclone I know what the aftermath is like, don't avoid those towns that are affected as they need your support and business more than ever to survive.

I'd suggest the Bruce Highway will be a priority to have cleared/repaired.
And yes, I agree with what the others have stated - about supporting the smashed up communities. Townsville totally missed out on Debbie's "visit" so from there up will be normal.
Take care & enjoy the trip.
I'll be heading home (& back to hand watering twice a week) in a couple of weeks but up the normal way we travel - the inland route via Emerald & Charters Towers.

We live in Mackay and, yes it was a nasty one but all is getting back to normal. We are also heading off on the Big Lap on May the 1st and heading north with no hesitation. flooding is peaking today but it goes down fairly quickly. If you intend to stay at a park in Airlie Beach area just phone the day before to check but I am sure they will be back up and running and as the others say they need the people back to support them. We regularly caravan up north and stay for months at a time. If you are going through to Port Douglas you should at least do a day trip up to the Daintree and across the ferry. It is well worth it. And the markets at Port D are really great.

OOPS I meant to say in Rockhampton the flooding is peaking today but the road is still open especially with their new raised highway.

And if going to Douglas.
PLEASE keep going up as far as Cooktown.
It's bitumised now. and really a jewel in your eye.
Stand at the lighthouse and see what Cook saw
when he beached his boat for repairs,
and plotted his route back out through the reef.
Magic place. also the old Chinese cemetery with the vertical graves
at back end of the main cemetery.
AND look at the dates in there.
I saw some from the 17th century from memory.

Yrs ago. There was a local "eccentric" whitey lived over in the Mangroves.
(20\25ish yrs from mem,).
Used to swim across to town for a drink and supplies occasionally.
Never knew if croc's got him or what?.
That bloody Bitumin road though. Takes all the adventure out of things.
