Thanks kiwijims for this reminder. Don't panic stay calm and listen to all advice. I am a Cairns resident and have weathered many cyclones in caravans and homes. If you were down south in the storm belt, storms sneak up on you! Cyclones give you plenty of time to prepare and be ready okay,

Let's hope people in the path of this Cyclone take your advice chappy,
I sure hope you people up in Cairns are safe, keep your heads down, although having been through these storms before, I'm sure you will be well prepared.
The travelers who may be on the road at present, and are camped out in the Bush, with-out radio contact, are the ones who are a worry, being caught myself in that situation, many years back, it was an experience I don't want to go through, ever again.

One more tip. Cyclones don't stop once they have crossed the coast. They can still have damaging winds as they head inland. The rain they bring can have dreadful consequences on inland river flows. Drought conditions to floods very quickly. Seek local advice whenever you can.

Yes Chappy on the present course it will be a cat 2 at Charters Towers , And i remember when the one that hit Innisfail did a lot of damage on the Atherton tablelands . We have had plenty of notice on this on so if you don't have to be in the area you should not be there.

And Debbie has come and passed! And is causing problems further afield from the coast crossing point. We are in Cairns waiting to head south in 2 days. But will head off when we know its going to be safe. Cairns has had no weather problems but food supplies are nowe interrupted by highway closers around bowen. The rail is cut. That means road transport to the North will now take inland routes and a lot more trucks on inland roads. Please take care fellow travellers.

You get plenty of warning.
Either get out of the way.
Or go down local Sandstone pub and get drunk for a coupla days.
That's what we did 40 ish yrs ago.
Solidest structure in town and try to empty the taps.
You normally get around a 4 days to a weeks warning b4 rains start and lock you in.
Caravan. Bolt.
Staying Home. just have your normal things.
plus genny and coupla torches, Lamp (LED)Battery's.
You have first aid kit. Right.
Coupla 20ltrs drinking water. Tucker to suit.
We just turn on genny when power drops out
and watch DVD's till it comes back on again
Genny runs home fridges. Air cond, pool pumps.
and next door too, sans his Air cond.
If anybody mobile. travelling. and with the notice we get.
Doesn't shift their arse away to safety. Sorry. you deserve all you get.
36 hrs running away from the rain, is a LOT of miles covered.
A caravan that gets full force of it. Is no longer a caravan believe me.
I've seen a few.
It's a LOT safer to bolt and return. Than stay and try to dodge,
It gets you. you have NOT got a home anymore.
Not worth the risk.
Modern homes (30ish yrs old and less) unless in low lying area
or a big old tree within radii.
It shouldn't bother you.
Just the old Timber\tin ones and carports.
If you live in Cyclone areas. a Genny is\should be,
part of your home.
as is a container for water volume. enuff tucker for a week or so.
and decent first aid kit.(Mainly for others)
A lot install a 100\200 ltr sheet water tank alongside of house. strapped down in shelter.
if gutters don't fill it. Tap will b4 needing it.
There's your washing water.
coupla\four 20\25 ltr plastic inside from tap. Drinking.
It's only people that don't prepare, and listen to those doomsayers from down South. that have problems

They won't take it if direct hit. Modern homes do.

You can always build again.

You don't lose the land. Just make sure you insured.

HE wanted it.)
Same price as single deck brick.
Couldn't insure. sold again following month.

The councils should be shot for allowing it.
Just look at a contours map on Google maps.
All run off and flat lands are grazing\cropping land.
NOT brick boxes.
Build up.
I was told that 60 odd yrs ago. Always built either on side of decent hill,
or a min of 100ft above sea level
and no less that 15 min walk from beach.
They know it happens somewhere along here EVERY yr.
Yet they continue to build and damage. and whinge.
Until common sense rules, and councils council.
with human safety in mind.
This will never end.
