Ayers Rock, when it was Ayers Rock. The village consisted of four "motels", a servo, homes and equipment shed for the park rangers and staff. Plus, there was the greatest pub in Australia. The Ayers Rock Hotel. The motels were, The Ayers Rock Chalet. The Red Sands Motel. The Inland motel. The Uluru Motel. The airstrip was almost alongside The Rock.
There was no radio, telephones, TV or newspapers. The road was all gravel from Alice Springs. (283 miles ?)
Possibly, because of the isolation, for want of a better term, people who lived/worked out there enjoyed a lifestyle that was somewhat unique.
Anyhow, there are a few people, like myself who are working on the idea of a reunion, in SA. Seems that many former empolyees of the old motels, etc live down south.

Didn't work there but I climbed it in Aug 86, Still got the Rangers certificate!

Didn't work there either pipes, but I was there in 74 / 75 and climbed the rock - great views. Was on route from Adelaide to Darwin. Back then the road was dirt from Pt Augusta, all the way to Darwin, and I reckon it hadn't seen a grader for a long time.
