hoping for tips/advice for travelling to Tassie for the months of dec,jan,and feb.

Hi everyone,
My husband and I, Margaret and Brian, with our little dog Hamish are hoping to travel to Tassie for a period of three months in December this year. We will be taking our 17' caravan and Ford Territory. We would like to do as much free or low cost camping as possible. Our desire for advice is related to the following:
What should we do to make the trip over as comfortable as possible for our little dog?
Will we have problems finding camp spots/showgrounds camps, etc in what will be peak holiday time?
Any other areas we should consider.
We are newbies to this forum, in our 70's, and not experienced in caravanning and so would be most grateful for any hints or advice .

Welcome to the gang Margaret and Brian, enjoy here and out in the playground.
Mmmm, Tassie hey. Hamish will need to have a special doggy room for the trip across and back so maybe get Hamish used to a confined space for at least 9+ hours, my thoughts on that anyway. Once you leave Hamish you can't go back down.
Get a copy of Camps Australia Wide, current edition is Camps 8 but I think 9 is due out any time now. Also and as well even get a copy of Wiki Camps for your phone or poota, under $10 and worth every cent and I tell you that for free. By having both those you will find the free camps all around Tassie. I check Camps first then tune into Wiki to read up to date comments and look at the pics then make a choice form that, all works well for me.
Your are going over during the 'peak' season but I think you will find heaps of like minded travellers in Tassie most of the year these days.
Most important thing is to HAVE A GREAT TIME WHILE THERE and,
Keep safe on the roads and out there.

As I have never been to Tassie, then unfortunately I can not comment on that part of the world
Dougwe has given some good advice, in regards to Camp Australia Wide book, and the Wikicamps, as well as travelling with a dog on the ferry
As you say that you are not experienced free camping travellers, then perhaps between now and December, you may consider taking a few short road trips, using the free camps in your area The short trips will give you an idea of what essentials you need to have, for your situation, and what you can leave behind to lighten the load
Never be afraid to ask questions here on this forum, or when you are in the free camps. I can assure you that no one knows everything, and that we all learned what we now know, by asking someone else.
I hope that you and your hubby have many happy and enjoyable road trips, in the many years ahead

G'day Magaret and Brian, and welcome to the forum. Plenty of great advice and folks on here. Don't forget to try out the two games - Who is This in the I digress section and Pick ThisPlace in the general section. 'Pick this place' is a great way to find new places to explore.
Another vote for camps book and wikicamps. Can' t say much about dogs or Tassie as I don't have one and am based in WA. Peak holiday time it is possibly best to book in advance where possible, but many freecamps are a free for all as well.

Hi Margaret and Brian from Tassie , Your little dog will need to have a hydadid worm treatment within 2 weeks of boarding the ferry( have you documents confirming he has had them with you) and there is no choice for kenneling on the boat.............what there is ,is what you get. So a lot of people leave there pets in there vans with vents open as they are more settled and comfortable there.
For free camps get in early .....by 2pm, plenty of them around...... and not big distances between stops. You'll see the RV friendly signs up as you enter a town
Low cost go for conservation areas or forestry areas that have camp sites.................... no national parks will allow a dog .
Try and book ahead if you want a caravan park in a specific area.
Don't forget to make a return booking for the ferry!

Thank you all so much for such great advice. I didn't know about the hydadis requirement or that you could leave your pet in the van, certainly something to consider. I will certainly make a return booking as having read a post on grey nomads about difficulties getting back to the mainland without one. Again, thanks everyone, Margaret

Been there with a caravan, not much free camping anymore and everything is more expensive, weather can be very unpredictable.
the oysters are good, but $75 a kg for crayfish is expensive
