Hi all planning trip up to Darwin in may .. have been working out stops on the way free camping and parks .. thinking about stopping at the oasis caravan park in coober pedy ... anyone stayed there ? park is central to the town that's what I found appealing !!
Have heard about ribas .. and the opal inn .. stuart range caravan park ..
Would like your help in choosing which park to stay ? for a few nights .

We have always stayed at Ribas , not the most modern park but good value , safe and close enough to everything you want to see , they used to do a mine tour as part of the accomodation deal but don't know if this still happens.

Stayed at Oasis last September, we would go back in the area. They lock the gates at night, but give you the code to the lock

We stayed at Oasis last July they also have a informative tour of the town very interesting place . Caravan park was reasonable with friendly staff .

Have stayed at the Oasis. The big gates are locked at night, not sure if they are keeping you in or keeping others out. Place seemed to pretty much empty every morning and fill up full every night. At one end of the street, but close enough to the main shopping area.

I left 80c in the shower.. Lol.. Good facilities considering electricity is expensive ..

We use Stuart Range. It's far enough for the locals not to walk out there but close enough for us to walk. They do not need to lock gates. The sites are the best size and the amenities block was excellent. The shop makes the best pizzas in town.

Be aware of security wherever you stay in Coober Pedy.
Keep the door to the van locked when you are in it overnight, and also if you leave it empty during the day.
In general terms it is ok, but there is a small band of problem young people, who will open doors looking for wallets or other things of value, even when people are in vans at night. Police are aware of the culprits but hadn't been able to stop them when we were there mid last year.
Do not let this stop you stopping there, but simply take some additional precautions to protect your valuables.
PS we stay at the Stuart Range park. If you do stay there, pick a site (self serve) in the inner rows away from the fence line for better security. The amenities are good, with water available for a cheap price, and a small charge for a 3 minute shower.

Thanks for pointing out the security issues in coober pedy .. I guess many of these bush towns have a similar problem with the youngies too much time on their hands and no work I guess ! yes always a worry at night ... more so when we free camp ! always on edge but so far hasn't stopped us from doing what we love .

Dare to do something different.
Stay in the Underground motel , when I was driving , I allways wanted to try that.
So when we got our mh & did a half lap . We did it . Liked it so much , that , 2yrs later . Did it again.
