Evening all,
I've been mulling things over and was just wondering how you manage if you are traveling solo with pooches, but have a Drs appointment (or even need to spend time at a shopping centre).
I will be traveling solo with my two fluffy mutts and just wondering how that is going to work... :\

I would dearly like to get another dog but having one when on the road seems like it will be a problem.
National Parks are out; despite many of them being havens for feral dogs we are not permitted to take a dog on a lead into a camping area well used by humans.
Many caravan parks prohibit dogs.
Australia really is a very dog unfriendly country.

It is a real worry. I have a motorhome and when I need to go shopping I open the roof hatch and the two rear windows (you would need a ladder to access them) and set the two fans running. She has food and water and the van stays reasonably cool. Though I don't travel in the hot weather. When I'm a way, I save a lot of money by staying away from the shops LOL.
Its when you get sick, that's the real problem. A little time ago I got appendicitis. Fortunately I was with Jules47 and Billeeeeeee, at Waruma Dam (long way from civilisation) They took care of me and Molly while I was carted off in a helicopter to Bundaberg. They took care of Molly until I could get back and collect her and my van. Its times like that you really need good friends. Thanks Jules and Billeeeeee.

That was the reason I didn't take on my little grand dog (which turned into disaster anyways). I figured it'd be just my luck with people being how they are these days (can't mind their own beeswax) that my windows would be smashed if I had to leave him in the car to shop. I had some stupid maggot move him once when I'd tied him up outside a shop, (trust me...the position was fine and he'd been there about 90 seconds). I couldn't come up with a solution. So I couldn't/didn't take him (now he's dead, ultimately from neglect, and I have never and will never get over that). Whenever I'm anywhere that people can't have a dog I always offer to dog sit them. I wish I knew the answer. I think stealth is the answer. I did never think about getting sick tho msg. I'll be interested to hear the tips. I would love a dog.....but.....there's too many issues for me to sort I think.

I am able to leave some windows and the hatch open. At least 3 fans going and some curtains closed so no direct sun heating the inside, when I have to leave Daisy to go shopping or appointments.
Luckily when I got sick I was at my sons in Hervey Bay.
The year before when a dear friend got sick and ended up in Shepparton Hosp, I took over the care of her 2 dogs and her motohome at Greens, also putting the dogs in care for a few days as I was spending a lot of the time at the hospital.
It can be done with the right people around you, as msg has confirmed.

I,ve had dogs (proper) for best part of 40 yrs. Cats for over 20 .Dogs, even on yachts are a hassle near land,
Cats meanwhile, ARE invisible in relation to. And very easy to handle, keep out of trouble.
Primarily. NO barking. NO digging and no ****ing leg everywhere..
You want to travel with pet,
I,d be thinking of a pet, and be prepared to loose it if not neear civilisation and get sick,
If avail to cattery, IE. I, m in Brissie for 10 days, cattery cots at $16.50 pd. Think if you crook for a month
Anybody Single, travelling with pet. Realistically. Has to be prepared to lose it.. Couples, fine.

I can't imagine anyone setting out with a much loved pooch *expecting* to lose it! I realise being permanently on the road with animals (of any kind) presents challenges however surely not much different to traveling with young children. And one doesn't set off *expecting* to lose them! lol
And I have just realised that there is a 'Traveling with Pets' sub-forum... I probably should have posted my query there! :)

Yes....if you can't afford pets, including expenses that maybe unexpected....don't get one. They're NOT disposable.

I would have no problems paying for someone to look after Molly. But, its a matter of who I would trust her with. Certainly not just anyone in a free camp or CP. She wouldn't do too well in a boarding kennel either.
Can't tie her up outside a shop. She would definitely go missing before I came out. She's so cute!!! or so everyone says.
Was going to leave her in the back of Brothers ute one day while I visited my mother in hospital. (Too hot in my car) Bro said no because someone would take her. So we had to go in one at time.
Yep, vet bills have been quite high. Tic treatments. She developed anal gland problems two years in a row ended up costing me a packet.
Arhhhh the issues with taking fur babies on the road.
But. there is no way I would travel without her.

I said if a person reads . If travelling alone off the map and things go wrong, to you or pet you must be prepared to accept that maybe.....

I lost a dog while at sea 50 yrs ago.injured, no avail treatments
Just be prepared is all. Plus on pension. Bigvet bils or kennels??.. Not all can afford.
My last cat cost over 6 grand in last 12 months of his life and another grand plus on last visit.
Which he didn,t come home from.
You have to be prepared. Financially and mentally. That,s ALL... i,m saying.

I am now planning my first solo trip. It is the loneliness that concerns me, not the nights I have never travelled alone. As for the fury children I don't go where they can't go.

My pooches are my most gorgeous best mates and I can afford medical, kennel, whatever expenses required by them (it would be irresponsible to have a pet and not be prepared to cover costs for them as required, imo).
So, it's nice to have an idea of ways to make life a little easier for them and me... 'where I go, they go' might take just a bit more planning - especially, as has been pointed out (thanks!) in case I get crook, which I see as the biggest potential issue - but that would be the same if I lived in a house, I guess.
Glad I'm not the only one that wouldn't travel without my pooches! :)

i travel with a dog and have sometimes left her at the rspca for the day (if available). or the local vet might know someone who is happy to dogsit.
and some places that won't let you have a dog with you - national parks f'rinstance - occasionally have a contact number of someone in the nearest tow. maybe call into the visitors info place and ask?

You are entitled to your opinion Diane and am sure you are a caring pet owner.
You just have to be careful how you say things on here, some people are getting 'old and crusty'.
