Hi all, my wife and I both in mid 60s, have Mitsubishi Pajero/Scenic Vega Caravan, have travelled through back of NSW and QLD to Longreach and home via east coast, what a marvellous country we have. Sometime this year we would like to Adealde, Alice Springs, Darwin, Broome, Perth, Margaret River back to Adelaide. Any tips on best time, quiet time etc, all info appreciated.

Went up the middle and around the west coast from Perth June /July last year . Extremely busy had to book ahead as almost all caravan parks were fully booked. Cool in the middle but as we travelled north weather was excellent. would avoid going during school holidays as this was the busiest time.

G'day McSporran and welcome to the forum. Plenty of great advice and folks on here. Don't forget to try out the two games - Who is This in the I digress section and Pick ThisPlace in the general section. 'Pick this place' is a great way to find new places to explore. Can't help much on the travel plans as havn't left WA yet :)

Hi McSporran, We're looking at doing a quick trip to Adelaide after Easter, spending a bit of time in that area then heading up through the center, hopefully to Darwin then a quick trip back to SE Qld. We have only 3 months though as we have commitments in August. Look at being up north in the cooler winter months. WA's spring wildflowers are something to see as you are going that way. Most nomads head north during the winter months so plenty of people on the road. In 2015 we went over to the west in April, May, June and July and even though many were on the road never had problems finding a place to stay. We did a combination of CPs and free camps. There is a Geocaching event in Alice Springs over Easter. Enjoy your travels and welcome. Cheers.

My advise would be to plan around your exit. Work out how much time you intend to stay away - you need to exit the Northern part of Australia by no later than mid September.
It gets extremely hot towards the end of September and it is tolerable during the day,. but nights become very uncomfortable and will spoil your experience. I believe you need to plan to arrive in the North in May, exit by September.
There is so much to see, and I know everyone is different, but I spent 3 months just in the NT and still, there is heaps to see that I missed, I will have to go back.
I spent 3 months in 2014 just in South Australia and have to return to see places I missed. In 2013 I spent the 3 months in NT Your plans are achievable, but I would think would be better over three years.
In closing, don't take too much notice of travelers that advise you not to explore a region because in their views "Its not worth it". I would have missed so many beautiful places if I had taken their advise.
