It maybe my imagination, but since I have been a member, the members on here seem to be putting up more and more threads which are just a link to another web site, but not including any of their own content at all. That will not be a problem for those with unlimited internet time, but for those who have limited internet time such as myself, and don't visit sites which are high in data down load content i.e. movies, a short paragraph or intro would be appreciated, so even if we cant go and see the link, we have some idea of what its about.

Cross posting to other forums used to be a no-no. In some forums the rules were such that doing so was an offence that resulted in disciplinary offence. I suspect that Cindy would also take a dim view of it. People are probably getting away with it here as Cindy does not have time to read every thread and there are no other moderators. Good of you to bring the subject up Ian.
Cross posting is also seen as a way that members of another forum can poach members to their forum.

iana, consider me a 77 year old slow learner if you like but, can you please spell out in detail exactly what it is you are complaining about, sorry but I don't really get it. Maybe a couple of others will appreciate my query.
And that's it. I'm just saying that for those with low data allowances, a bit of a paragraph describing the link would be good.
So, "this is a link to a caravan forum, which I have found very interesting and helpful" (low data) or "this is a link to a short movie about 4x4 driving" (hi data download).

its up to you wnether you want to open a link, if your worried about opening a links don't open them simple .links for most people supply a great deal of interesting information and they do add to this forum it's just common sense in my opinion to have them on the forum...

Gday...
I understand your problem Ian.
It would be good if there was always something that gave an indication of the content of the link ... and why it is to "my" advantage to open it.
I too have 'limited broadband' (the legacy of being full-time on the road and with finite resources ) and therefore I do not open anything that is "YouTube" or has an MPxx file extension.
If I do click on a link that is going to open a 'movie' etc than I just close the page/video before it runs and move on.
When I include a link, I usually take a 'pic' of the main content on the webpage so that people don't have to open the full link and/or scroll through it to find the pertinent detail.
However, I do open web links that lead to information ... ie just a webpage that should have minimal impact on my data allowance - for instance -
Unfortunately, I guess the bottom line is ya gotta make ya own choices which ya wanna open.
Cheers - John

Ian isn't suggesting the removal of links in posts ... simply that some indication of WHY the attached link is pertinent to readers ... and that if something has a few Mb of content, that it be highlighted - along with the reason it is pertinent or of valuable information.
As I said above, as a full-time traveller with finite resources, I just need to be prudent on what I use it on.
And that's it. I'm just saying that for those with low data allowances, a bit of a paragraph describing the link would be good.

Totally agree with you, its just laziness on their part if they just copy & paste the description from the page in question it would be better that nothing. Personally I don't follow just links.

Easy solution! if you don't want to open a link, don't click on it.
Laziness has nothing to do with it, some people just want to be spoon fed.

Ahh now I get it fortunately, Mega bites, Kila bites and Baby bites don't really worry me because of my Bigpond bundle. I get 100 Gigs of internet, free mobile and free landline. I pay $75 every pension day and about every 5 or so weeks miss a payment to use up my credit. Even with Mothers Netflix usage we only use between 10 and 20 Gigs. So I look at all the links, good fun.

That's great WHEN you're at home, but I doubt very much you'd get 100 gigs of internet when you're on the road. We spend less than 6 months at home so we just use a mobile connection full time, so data is valuable to us and not something to be wasted. Add to that mobile speeds are iffy at best of times so I for one don't want to follow links just for curiosity, because some idiot thinks everybody will like it.
One day you might follow a link thinking it's good fun and there might be a virus attached at the other end, won't be "good fun" then hey!.

madaboutled, I didn't say everybody should follow me, I was just enlightening people to a good plan. Funny how a lot of people get the wrong message, but then one must remember where one is, good fun hey!.

Anyway most people who post links, also give a hint of the content, so as far as I can see, the blame is not on the poster, but on the clicker.

Certainly can Aussie, my last word on this subject, I've got better things to do than worrying about whether or not I can afford to click on a link.
