Crocodile attack: Man killed by 3.5-metre saltie at Cahill's Crossing in Kakadu

A man has been killed by a 3.5-metre crocodile at the notorious Cahill's Crossing in the Northern Territory after trying to walk across the East Alligator River in actions police have described as "foolish".
The 47-year-old man, thought to be from the remote community of Gunbalanya, was at the crossing with two women about 4:00 pm yesterday when the trio decided to try and make it across.
Cahill's Crossing is not a footbridge, and at the time of the attack a recommendation on the NT Government's road report website said only high-clearance four-wheel drive vehicles should cross.
"Cahill's Crossing is notorious for crocodiles and to walk across it to me is just foolishness," NT Police Duty Superintendent Bob Harrison said.
That's just been waiting to happen. Geeeezzzz, you just would not attempt that. Must of been suicide. Then again.....there's been a LOT of people do stupid stuff like that. Such as swimming while you're on vodka 15 minutes after seeing an 18 footer across the bank!!!!!

Oh Cupie - just one of the other attacks up there on a local bloke (most attacks are locals, those who should know better....the cry always goes out 'tourist', but it's simply not true).
Anyways, this other fella...he'd grown up in Katherine (so should know the risks) and was at a birthday party on the Mary River. Full of grog....and decided to swim across and back to see if he could make it before the croc came. He made it across......but not back. In front of 30 ppl at the party.

And here in Fitzroy (Rocky) 10 yrs or so ago.
Local Black fella swam across.

Always put one of the pig dogs across any dodgy looking water first.

You can't control crocodile populations anymore is that true I think it is? There allowed to breed to plague proportions so this has to happen.its just like the white shark,our beaches are just Pin prick in size when you look at how big the ocean is but the greenies rule Australia so there lives are more important then our kids in the surf apparently, but no all is.Not lost the green movement want drones up there that will fix it!,,,sorry about the rave I guess Iam just an old out of touch dinasaure lol...

They were the attack dogs. Short lifespan most of them anyway.. Even with the chest armour some of us put on them. Held pig till we got there
I used stainless plate, sandwiched in leather so the tusks would slide. most only used thick leather and tusks used to throw them. The next dog with it's chest\guts laid open won't be the first.
And Cahills. 30 odd yrs ago. A lot fished it. Specially just as it's starting to flow over. Same as Shady Camp. with one or two holding big bores. I used my 30-0, or Sport stores $25 Mk3, or 4. .303 FMJ, Croc\pig specials. Filed tips off and crossed the top with knife\hammer to break up when hit.
Plus, when you camped at night. let off a shell. Blackfella's left you alone.
You want to see croc's (and walk on the bloody things almost). Go to Corroborree or Aforementioned Shady camp. Great fishing. but don't walk the banks or hang out over side of boat for any reason.
Barra. Beautifull 'Toga. (Sarratoga, prehistoric and great fighting fish) and all the handbags you could want. More than the Florida Wetlands they reckon in numbers and size.
You like 'Toga fishing. My alltime fav. Go to Corroboree. It's magic, Fly, or small spinner blades on 6\12lb nylon, 20lb fluro leader. Drop it lightly just on edge of, or between lilly pads and hang on. they monsters. Light is soooo much fun.
Yea/. As I was saying.. Croc's. Don't swim round there.OK.

Humans seem to think they have the right to own everything.
Croc's, Sharks, lions, tigers etc. Were here long b4 us peasants.
We were probably put here originally As part of the food chain anyway.
Just happened to develop enough brain to kill everything. without rhyme or reason. Including ourselves.
Pity it didn't develop a little further hey.

Hey Macka I use to camp out at Yellowstone Lagoon 40 years ago with a good aboriginal friend of mine. Even then people would not believe there were crocodiles in there. Great weekends getting away from the cr@p in Darwin, my mate was related to the tradition owner who we visited. One day he had a dog wich was ripped across the chest by a boar, was using maggots to clean out the rotten flesh.
Dog survived and hatted pigs after that and he was not used as a pig dog. Great times before it became a tourist spot.

Well! this thread is running true to form, a man gets taken by a croc and all of the replies have to comment on is his stupidity, perhaps he wasn't bright, regardless I'm sure he has family who at this time are devastated by his loss.
How about a small show of compassion instead of the superior attitude being displayed here.

Considering the man taken was a local going home he should have known better. Still not nice to happen to any one and in my first post I sated and say again Sorrow to his family BUT he was a local not a tourist who may not of know.

Standard rule up here in the NT, don't go in water unless it has tap's or tiles ! & even then have a good look first. Found a 2.5 mtr croc on our 5 acre homestead a few years back, were miles from any water, was eyeing up the goats & horse for a feed. The croc catcher came & picked him up, probably a "Hermes" handbag by now.
Locals seen to get taken more often than tourists, and this is why !!
It has NOT been proven that it was a croc attack. The guy might have slipped and then been taken.
There are signs everywhere for people to read 'BEWARE'.
I have been over that crossing a lot of times and even when the tide is out there are red eyes everywhere.

Sorry if I offended any members.
What a pity that in these days of pretty good communication that those poor people can't just phone the camp and a truck be sent out to get them across. I mean if you can walk across, then a decent vehicle would have don the job.
It is easy for me to say don't enter the river and then what does the person crossing do? Camp out? We either build bridges or put in alternatives in larger towns. I have no idea of any practical solution but I am betting if a community gets together they could alleviate a lot of this sort of problem.
I don't even know if a phone will work out there.

This Fool was seen fishing at the Crossing !!!
Cars regularly get stranded at the crossing, and in 1987 a 40-year-old man was decapitated by a large crocodile while he waded in the water fishing.
