places to stay in or around darwin with small campervan

Hi everyone I need help .
Been planning my trip up the stuart to Darwin in may .. using the camps 8 book massive help ... But on arrival in Darwin camp grounds so expensive I have raised this issue in previous posts and apart from the Robbie robins reserve doesn't appear to be any where else ??
So where do most of you grey nomads stay when visiting Darwin .. what sites do you recommend in maybe a 40 km radius around Darwin ?
Not worried about staying in the cbd but somewhere within striking distance to have a day trip and see the sights ?

Hi goldenyears, we stayed a couple of years ago at Tumbling Waters CP at Berry Springs, beautiful spot about 60km south of Darwin it's a pretty easy drive in and central to other attractions such as Litchfield NP and The Adelaide River. I looked at the current rates $30 for an unpowered site and $38 for powered, stay a week and you get the 7th one free. I think that these rates are a bit less than what the parks are currently asking in Darwin, my brother in law stays in his van a few months each year out at the Lee Point CP (17kms) where they are asking $50 a night for their unpowered sites and $55 for powered. Someone may be able to advise you on free camping areas but we only used the caravan parks when we were travelling in the top end.

Thanks for the info bear sounds like a great spot ... and 60km is not too bad when its all highway .. yes Darwin asking tooo much .

ONE of the places I have found about an hr away on the arnham highway is the corroboree park tavern unpowered $17 per night maybe perhaps just a little bit too far but would be interested to know if anyone has stayed here as we plan to take this route to jabiru ... then head back down to pine creek .

hi there,
just wondering if the tumbling caravan park has sand flies? We went to a caravan park in swansea and my wife Recived nasty bites from those flies. Thank you for the advice about the caravan park.

goldenyears, haven't stayed at The Corroboree Tavern but we did stay a few kms down the Arnhem Hwy at the Mary River Wilderness Lodge CP (near The Bark Hut Inn) which although basic had everything we needed it was roughly the same price as Berry Springs but a bit further out of Darwin. When you get to Jabiru make sure you go to the rangers station and get your permit for your stay in the park otherwise like us you could drive the 40kms out to Ubirr Rocks only to be told you can't get in without a permit and the only place that you can get one is back in Jabiru. It's was a long drive out there when we had to do it twice especially when it was across flooded causeways and through bushfires but the big Maui handled it and the scenery was nice.

When you get to Pine Creek - stay at the Pussycat Flats - racecourse - great place

Directly over the road from the bark hutt ( almost ) there is a gateway to a large billabong, shady trees etc, folks there would allow camping, had basic ammenities etc ( toilets/showers/bbq, etc ) i'm trying to remember their name as i type, but it's not happining.......sorry.

Hi. We always stayed at a permanent site just back from lights at the Shell Cross roads going in. But they closed it a few yrs ago (or more. 10?)
Last few trips we stayed at Mandorah. at the old motel grounds. Parked in front of unit with full facilities. (water power showers etc. Van facing out across Darwin harb'r looking at Darwin itself. Perfect spot for watching the F111 Burn offs whey did them. with own private little man made hrbr to anchor tinnies in.
$25 ferry trip across bay to town. GREAT fishing in harbr and off jetty. Spanno's. Tuna. everything. AND cheap.
Also. the Darwin Aboriginal Traditional dancing group were based, and lived in motel and grounds. (Abbo lands) They used to practice on the beach and always gave us a full show b4 heading offf on tours. WITH Barbie.
Chuck a leftie for the park. 135? km's b4 Darwin, follow road past park to it's end. You there.
Entrance used to be second last turning on right. took you in round the back to car park. AND BAR. Great tucker there too.
Coupla days in Darwin itself, you've seen most of it.
Jetty worth a coupla visits for fishing and Doctors gulley once.
Everything else basically is outside of Darwin.
So whether you use the town or Mandorah, don't matter much. Travel wise.
And a much more peaceful place to stay.

I have the camps 8 book etc but first hand reports on here from people that have done it all probably many times I don't mind picking their brains !!
Never trust any body of water in the top end, have fun.
