I totally agree, I meet some Grey Nomads not long ago, and their stories, near death experiences, their adventures are well worth reading about.

I agree its easy to make comments via the computer, rather face to face, but also there are those of us on here may want to keep our lives to ourselves for one reason or another. In other words its none of your business (broadly speaking).

Now that I am older, a lot older, I think back about all the opportunities I had to talk to people before they fell off the perch! My Father in-law was fighting in ww2 in Crete, took his platoon into the mountains, and was hidden by priests at a monastery, the escaped the island secretly at night aboard the sub Thrasher. I new a pilot who was a "Path finder" flying Mosquitos, an engineer who hated Douglas Badar, the engineers I worked with were in the RAF flying Lancastors. I never asked them a thing. Yes there are many stories, but are other people really interested in hearing them.

The problem is, this forum is really about "Things" and "Places", its people after information and camping experiences.

Maybe not, but perhaps it is all we have. There are some lonely people out there, and this maybe their only pathway. I spend a lot of time on a computer, I have a hearing problem so conversation through a keyboard is much easier.
"Knowing what individuals had done in life would maybe? help to get better answers to questions too while knowing which answers were likely to be nearer the mark. Or is that too simple. People should share a bit, remember, peoples experiences are what make them."
Probably more to the mark, it hyjacks the thread. If the members want to share that info. it just a case of filling in the details on our profile page.
After a while on this forum, I joined another which was just a group of fellows from all walks of life, there they did put up stories, but there was also a fair bit of flak at times. The membership was so small, interest not there they closed it down. This was the "Mens Shed Online" but I enjoyed it.

Hey jim I met my bride at 21st, the first 21st I went to, we had a bit to much to drink, thought I would have trouble remembering her the next night, I may add she saw my brother down the street the next morning walking along holding a girls hand, thought I was a 2 timer. Still going along shaking after 46 years bouncing from 1 foot to the other, reallyhoping for a happy winding.

How I met my wife,
I was house sitting, after selling up to developers over Westmead way. I was half way doing up my first home covered in paint and Cra....p, when these to guys knocked on the door. We are buying your house. My response was to Pi...ss ....off.
After showing me the deal, I became homeless.
Then I had this offer to house sit, for free, in return for some house maintenance.
So I moved in. Did my thing, I took pity on the old lady across the road who's lawns needed mowing, More mowing etc.
I got home one Friday afternoon, and was doing my thing, cleaning out the gutters when I got attacked by this Redheaded lass who had jumped the front fence.
Who are you and what are you doing here. Mined your own business and choof off, Im Busy.
I got attacked one week later by the same redhead. Ok who are you then. Redhead replies my Aunt lives opposite. Oh I replied, she's not as noisy as you. What can I do for you then. Why are living here she replies. Cause I sold my home and I'm looking after these folks home for a while, while im looking to buy another, OK.
Ok.
Then she turns up a week later again. Hullo Jim. Hullo (Lambie). ........Hey Lambie I'm going away for three weeks R&R could you do me a favour and clear my letterbox while I'm away. Done Deal.
When I get back I Made a big mistake of buying a small box of Cadbury Choclates as a small gesture of a thankyou.
Then She asked if I would like to go to the dance up on the north shore on the next Saturday night. Can't dance, but what else could I say.
We sat 8 to a bench table. Wow 7 women all to myself, to dance the night away. Wow NOT.
She boxed me in, and I never got to dance with anyone else.
When it got time to ask her dad about getting hitched, 18months later. I could not cough up the words, So Lambie did it for me. Thankyou Redrover.

Had two tickets to a corporate work place ball at St Kilda town hall. Didn't have a partner to take so with less than two weeks till the gala night I went to Powerhouse near Albert Park Lake by myself looking to meet a nice young lady.
I cruised around as the Alan Eaton Big Band played, looking at all the girls standing waiting to be asked to dance & there she was my future wife. Asked her to dance & she said yes.
Took her out to the movies & asked her if she'd like to go to a ball & she said yes, I'd love to
We got on like a house on fire (still do). The rest is history.

Trade Training at Gosport REME Field Workshops. (V.M. - Vehicle Mechanic).
weekend pass. Down at local beach fairground. Self and two Jims.
Met three London girls from Potters bar Two Mary's and a Janet.
2 of us married 1 Mary and 1 Janet. Me at 21 yrs. Both lasted just on 30 yrs. Mine. Great wife. Mother. but not a traveller. Was doomed to fail. Got 3 kids and 9 beautiful Granddaughters out of it though.
How about some story's on your lives. work. sports. and what made each of you. You.
PS. I wear two hearing aids if going out too. Compliments a life on Draglines Dozers Excavators and cranes.
Plus one eye only really there for show.

Early on I put up too posts of some of my adventures, do a search on "Crash salvage", I never got round to doing the third and last one, much work goes into writing these things up, and editing the pictures. The last salvage I did was the most challenging.

It ain't the 'telling the story' ... it is the overwhelming regurgitation of the SAME story over and over and over and over again ad infinitum.
Also, when a poster dictates, with repeated insistence, that the only 'good advice' is theirs it all gets a bit much.
Ultimately, I think it works against posters like that ... as readers miss any genuine 'unbiased' advice there may be amidst the waffle.
I am VERY certain no-one wants to hear my 'life story' ... let alone repeatedly.
Anyway, all to their own and I hope all and sundry have a great 2017 - happy, healthy, prosperous and rewarding.

I agree with your thoughts here John, the I've been everywhere, done everything and can give expert advice on any subject type posts wear pretty thin after a while.
I have also traveled widely, lived an unconventional life and am quite satisfied with what my wife and I have achieved, I'm not grumpy and reclusive, simply don't have the need, nor the desire, to constantly and repeatedly tell the world about it.

We have all LIVED A LIFE - don't get to this age without it happening but "chest thumping" does not interest me.
Met a guy a while back who would have had to be 150 to do all the things he said he had done or ccould do - every second sentence contained "i'm a boilermaker" till I told him I used to have an engineering shop!

I was sitting on a collapsed tree branch which fell over a creek at the base of a quarry, the creek would wend through natural bushland and I had a friend that lived by there and she and I would swim in the creek, it was a gorgeous little place, not even the leeches mattered to us. I had a long bike ride there from where I lived, but that didn't matter as I loved it there. Homelife was so strict that for me going to that creek meant so much, I guess I felt free. Then when I was 17 there was a fair on the parkland by the creek, I was there with my parents and siblings, walking around with my friend Denise when a handsome young guy walked up and began talking to us and it wasn't long before I noticed he was paying me a lot of attention lol, I was so shy and worried my parents would see me talking to him, I told him I would be in heaps of trouble so I better go, he asked me how old I was, I said 17, he said can I meet him there on the same date the following year, he wrote the date and 2pm on a tree trunk , I said okay and off I went hoping I was not seen. I wrote the date and time down and made sure I would be there a year later, though I felt he would probably forget. Each time I went to the creek I would go to the tree trunk and take a look at what he wrote. It was a little secret which I held onto which seemed like forever lol. I remember being so happy yet nervous when the date of that day finally arrived, I got off my bike and sat on the grass near the tree looking around but I could not see him anywhere. Not long after a car drove in along the track it was a dark green Skoda as it got closer a hand waved to me out the window, and I knew it was him, I wished I had dressed myself up nicer, but I knew if I did my parents would suspect something. We met there secretly for a few months ( I was 18 now and he was 25 ) and he told me he was going to come and meet my parents and then we can go out on dates together, I was terrified of him meeting my parents. When I told my father he was coming to meet them he was so angry and even picked my little sanyo taperecorder up and threw it and it smashed on the concrete and I was forbidden to see Rob, so when he arrived fear had me run out the house and out to his car, I jumped into his car and we went to the Waverley Drive-In in Cannington, it was a horrible night of fear for me and at intermission I asked to be taken home, I figured I might not be in so much trouble if I don't get home to late. Rob told me he would wait on the corner all night until 6am incase I get thrown out or feel the need to run. He did not desert me no matter how strict my father treated me. Then one night 2 weeks later Rob came to the house and stood up to my father like a real man, he told my father he was taking me out weather he approves or not, my father then said, no one takes any of his daughters out, they have to marry and then go out, with that Rob said I will marry her if she will have me, and in an instant I said yes. That was the 18th Oct 1969, he gave me an engagement ring bought from Caris Bros in Victoria Park he lived in Victoria Park) which in those days seemed like miles away. We got engaged on 21st October 69, and Dad had us married on the 27th Dec 1969, we didn't go out on any real dates as young lovers would, but we knew we loved one another even so young with so little time spent with each other. I treasure the time we had together from the first little meeting in 1968 then 1969 until 2004 when he passed away. I often drive by that parkland and creek and remember the beautiful young man that came into my life there and how he meant the few little words he wrote on the tree trunk. I cruised around as the Alan Eaton Big Band played, looking at all the girls standing waiting to be asked to dance & there she was my future wife. Asked her to dance & she said yes.
Took her out to the movies & asked her if she'd like to go to a ball & she said yes, I'd love to
We got on like a house on fire (still do). The rest is history.

Down at local beach fairground. Self and two Jims.
Met three London girls from Potters bar
Two Mary's and a Janet.
2 of us married 1 Mary and 1 Janet. Me at 21 yrs.
Both lasted just on 30 yrs.
Mine. Great wife. Mother. but not a traveller. Was doomed to fail.
Got 3 kids and 9 beautiful Granddaughters out of it though.

Plus one eye only really there for show.

It ain't the 'telling the story' ... it is the overwhelming regurgitation of the SAME story over and over and over and over again ad infinitum.
Also, when a poster dictates, with repeated insistence, that the only 'good advice' is theirs it all gets a bit much.
Ultimately, I think it works against posters like that ... as readers miss any genuine 'unbiased' advice there may be amidst the waffle.
I am VERY certain no-one wants to hear my 'life story' ... let alone repeatedly.
Anyway, all to their own and I hope all and sundry have a great 2017 - happy, healthy, prosperous and rewarding.

I agree with your thoughts here John, the I've been everywhere, done everything and can give expert advice on any subject type posts wear pretty thin after a while.
I have also traveled widely, lived an unconventional life and am quite satisfied with what my wife and I have achieved, I'm not grumpy and reclusive, simply don't have the need, nor the desire, to constantly and repeatedly tell the world about it.

We have all LIVED A LIFE - don't get to this age without it happening but "chest thumping" does not interest me.
Met a guy a while back who would have had to be 150 to do all the things he said he had done or ccould do - every second sentence contained "i'm a boilermaker" till I told him I used to have an engineering shop!

I was sitting on a collapsed tree branch which fell over a creek at the base of a quarry, the creek would wend through natural bushland and I had a friend that lived by there and she and I would swim in the creek, it was a gorgeous little place, not even the leeches mattered to us. I had a long bike ride there from where I lived, but that didn't matter as I loved it there. Homelife was so strict that for me going to that creek meant so much, I guess I felt free.
Then when I was 17 there was a fair on the parkland by the creek, I was there with my parents and siblings, walking around with my friend Denise when a handsome young guy walked up and began talking to us and it wasn't long before I noticed he was paying me a lot of attention lol, I was so shy and worried my parents would see me talking to him, I told him I would be in heaps of trouble so I better go, he asked me how old I was, I said 17, he said can I meet him there on the same date the following year, he wrote the date and 2pm on a tree trunk , I said okay and off I went hoping I was not seen. I wrote the date and time down and made sure I would be there a year later, though I felt he would probably forget. Each time I went to the creek I would go to the tree trunk and take a look at what he wrote. It was a little secret which I held onto which seemed like forever lol. I remember being so happy yet nervous when the date of that day finally arrived, I got off my bike and sat on the grass near the tree looking around but I could not see him anywhere. Not long after a car drove in along the track it was a dark green Skoda as it got closer a hand waved to me out the window, and I knew it was him, I wished I had dressed myself up nicer, but I knew if I did my parents would suspect something. We met there secretly for a few months ( I was 18 now and he was 25 ) and he told me he was going to come and meet my parents and then we can go out on dates together, I was terrified of him meeting my parents. When I told my father he was coming to meet them he was so angry and even picked my little sanyo taperecorder up and threw it and it smashed on the concrete and I was forbidden to see Rob, so when he arrived fear had me run out the house and out to his car, I jumped into his car and we went to the Waverley Drive-In in Cannington, it was a horrible night of fear for me and at intermission I asked to be taken home, I figured I might not be in so much trouble if I don't get home to late. Rob told me he would wait on the corner all night until 6am incase I get thrown out or feel the need to run. He did not desert me no matter how strict my father treated me.
Then one night 2 weeks later Rob came to the house and stood up to my father like a real man, he told my father he was taking me out weather he approves or not, my father then said, no one takes any of his daughters out, they have to marry and then go out, with that Rob said I will marry her if she will have me, and in an instant I said yes. That was the 18th Oct 1969, he gave me an engagement ring bought from Caris Bros in Victoria Park he lived in Victoria Park) which in those days seemed like miles away. We got engaged on 21st October 69, and Dad had us married on the 27th Dec 1969, we didn't go out on any real dates as young lovers would, but we knew we loved one another even so young with so little time spent with each other. I treasure the time we had together from the first little meeting in 1968 then 1969 until 2004 when he passed away. I often drive by that parkland and creek and remember the beautiful young man that came into my life there and how he meant the few little words he wrote on the tree trunk.
