I had a ring from an old Mate of mine, who lives in Nelson, situated in the North of the South Island.
He is very concerned about reports that, if there is another major Earthquake along the same Fault line as the last Quake which struck Kaikoura, The whole South Island could be split in two !!!
N.Z. has been long known as the shaking Isles with over 5000 Earth tremors being recorded per year,
The new P.M. may have more on his plate than he knows, should the separation happen,
It must be a worry for people living along the Fault Line, especially now with the Sea Bed rising over 3 Meters out of the Sea, evidence that things could be on the move.
Anyone here thinking of visiting N.Z. you may have to hurry it along, or you may have to take two ferry trips to see the whole of N.Z.

I hope its a false alarm but there's been an increase in the quantities of tremors in recent years. I also wonder if the increase in geothermal activities are causing the Antartica ice melts. There are 400 known warm water lakes buried below the ice, lake Vostock being the largest but I can't find any stats regarding any changes in the lake's water temperatures, I know they are being monitored. My own layman thoughts are the increased number of tremors can be due to increased geothermal activities which would have a direct correlation to the lake's water temperatures.
Could global warming / changing weather patterns be due to increased heat of Earth's core.
Before I get shot down, these are my thoughts and based solely on my very limited general knowledge and not backed by any scientific research or data. Its just stuff that goes through my head when I'm relaxed at night near a campfire with a bourbon in my hand, staring at the stars and wondering what is out there as well as what is below us.

Know exactly what you mean relaxing near the campfire with a drink, your mind tends to go on all sorts of excursions, particularly after the second or third drink.
The plot on the map at the end puts things into perspective, we're fortunate in Aust missing most of the action, NZ certainly gets a bit of a hammering.

I can tell you that when we toured NZ in 1997 we were very much of the opinion that the whole place was a disaster waiting to happen.
A disaster from the volcanic action in the North Island to earth quakes in the South.
There were regular daily newspaper stories of mud slips in surburban areas.
Our view .. A beautiful place to visit but not a place to live.
ps. Fantastic people too. We had a memorable public bus ride in Auckland. It was just like a group of happy relo's going on a Sunday picnic with greetings & laughter the order of the day.

People in the colonies were fearing the same sort of thing happening back in 1840 after a lot of activity had been occurring - sure enough in 1841 New Zealand broke away from New South Wales.I think at the time it was reported by CNN that it was due to a period of global cooling. We can all put up our own theories on why things are occurring but at the end of the day nature will do whatever it wants without too much help from us.

After many years of working in stressful situations we feel pretty much the same. Nothing we say or do now will make any real difference to the world at large. Why not kick back & enjoy our remaining years in peace?
Enjoying our travels is the reward for our previous years of toil. If the South Island of NZ spits in two what real influence can we exert? So be it. We don't recommend too many drinks though. All things in moderation.

As the south Island has always been called the Main land, and the other ( Fushy bit ) the North Island has been described as The Pig Island, Us South Islanders, could concede and grant the Pig Island a new Status and call it. (almost) equal to the Main Land,
While the other bit that fell off would be returned to Aussie, as a training ground for improving Footballers and Cricketers, there's plenty of shell fish on the exposed sea bed now, so that will give the Aussies a bit of strength. LOL

A few things. New Zealand straddles both the Indoaustralian plate and the pacific plate. The plate boundary they are on is sliding past each other. The indoaus on is moving northwards. But the rate is about 6 cm a year. Enough to cause these terrible quakes but the process is on millenium time scales. Like in Oz if you are prepared to wait for 50 million years we wont have to fly to Hong Kong, we can walk there as it will be at the end of the street.
So its a natural tectonic process of the planets crustal plate movement. We dont get the same effect here as we are intraplate. In other words, we are in the middle of the plate and thus there are significant earthquake events. And what do occur, and there are plenty of them, are deep in the crust so the energy dissipates as it gets to the surface.
Global warming in an atmospheric issue of rising carbon particles trapping direct and indirect radiant energy from the sun. Plus increased albedo, reflection, as we remove vegetation etc. (Forests ). The interesting thing is that the research for this uses scientific methodologies and data capture, which has given us our mobile phones, computers, medical technologies and medicines etc, yet when we dont like the story, we say the science is faulty and there is no problem. Yet we rely in our daily lives on all that science has given us. Its so friggin sad and frustrating. There...thats my rant. I used to teach this stuff.

Perhaps you are talking of the gas molecule, Carbon Dioxide -not the elementary building block carbon, as found in diamonds and pencils?

Thankyou professor Phil for your lecture on both plate movements and global warming I was beginning to feel like I was back at school in a science class. I am not questioning the fact that we have entered a period of global warming as all the scientific research seems to back that up. Rather than getting frustrated and criticising those who are questioning the theories on the drivers and what needs to be done about it, have you ever asked yourself why they do that ? It's because the impact of the actions being suggested to reduce emissions will be devastating on certain industries and therefore on the lives of the people that the industries support. No wonder people are questioning the accuracy of the information you would want to make sure that if you are going to go through that much pain you are going to get something out of it.
Sorry kiwijim that doesn't help you keep your Antony Van Diemans Land in one piece.

Simple question for you - if in Australia we were able to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions to zero what would be the impact in degrees on global temperatures, how much will it decrease by ? With all the work that the scientists have done this should be easy to calculate i.e degrees increased/tonnes of green house gas produced by Australia. if the answer is .5, 1, 2, 3 degrees lets get on with it and reduce our emissions as quickly as possible, if the answer is very little, none or I'm not sure then why are we so willing to head like lemmings over the edge of the cliff ? That's the type of information people will need to have put in front of them before they will fully support losing their jobs, paying more for their energy, food, clothing etc.
For this discussion to continue it should really be started as a new post as it is has now gone completely away from Kiwijims OP. The problem is that people have very strong opinions on this subject and there is no doubt that it would become political (as you can see in a previous post) so I'm not gong to start it.

Reading my post written in haste. Yep.bagmaker. thanks for the correction. I was putting diamonds into the atmosphere instead of atmospheric gas. Oops. And yes, bear, I agree. Just got back from Emerald and they are excited that the coal industry will pick up with Adani. Gotta sympathise. People want jobs, and security and many industries rely on this. The same arguement occurred when Keating opened up the Oz economy to competition. He stopped protection. A lot of workers suffered but overall the Aus economy boomed. (Some suggest by too much). But I guess my concern is that we need to leave this planet intact for our children. (And yes way off track from Jims post...sorry). And if the scientific community is even half right, then we cant take a chance with continuing to run down a finite resource. We have the means to lead the world in reducing emissions and even if our efforts make negligible impacts globally, shouldnt we do our best to achieve something. To be an example? I taugh boys to be good men. My efforts had little impact on the day. It is in the fullness of time that the results stand out as to whether I was successful. As to whether society benefits from these efforts as it does when we bring our children up with ethics and values congruent with social values. To be good citizens. Its in the long march of time that we find our success. Thus with moderating our global emissions for our future generations so that they have a chance of living a life as good as ours.

My mate who ran a Dairy Farm in the back country of the South Island, ended up selling all his milkers because he just wasn't getting anything out of it, in the end, he is now breading cattle and said there is good money in it, plus far less hours of work compared to milking.
I won't get into a debate on the political virtues of Mr Key, it's a "no no " here,
and always ends up with "PUAHI" on ones face.

Maybe it would be better for us to take a leaf out of NZ's book and get rid of our upper house, not only would it save us heaps of money but it may finally get things moving. (tongue in cheek)
