There is no camping at any show grounds close to Newcastle. The closest is at Morrisett, about 40 k away. $20 a day. Not the best but far from the worse.

They use Newcastle show ground as parking for the entertainment centre and also for functions such as the caravan camping shows etc. not sure that it how good a venue it would be for camping. I read somewhere recently that the council were looking at possible places to set up a camping zone somewhere closer to the harbour foreshore as a way of attracting travellers to the area.

Neil and Raine, are there any other free / low cost campgrounds other than show grounds there?
Cheers, John.

Yeah rocket I guess that's why a lot of people don't bother to call in and also why council are now realising the opportunity they are missing out on. Meetoo try Maitland show ground it's $25 a night and maybe a little closer to Newcastle city than the Morriset show ground (only about 20 minutes up the road).

There is nothing wrong with Morisset SG. The amenities are old but they are well maintained.

Depends how close to Newcastle you want..... Myuna Bay Rest area is on the shores of lake Macquarie.....has toilets, no showers. .... or on the beach at Stockton (Lavis Lane entry)
One of the campgrounds shown on Rip and Rosie link is Freemans Campground. Its about 60klms from Newcastle proper - 30 from Swansea.
Not far from where we live and is in the Lake Munmorah State conservation area. Nice spot, close to shopping centres, beaches etc.
Not sure of cost................
Give me a pm if you decide to stay there and we will try and catch up for coffee.

Myuna Bay is not on that site. It is not on WiliCamps either. I think it is long gone. It was only a very short termer when it was available.
Thanks everyone from mee too.
Cheers, John.
