Mid May to Mid August coolest optimum temperature I would suggest, however some like it hot
so either side of these months will give it some sizzle.

Any of the winter months are OK for the Great Central Road. April to September.
2 permits are required, one for the NT side and one for the WA side. Both are free and available on line. There are conditions attached to the travelling of this road that you must be aware of and abide by. They are detailed on the permit.
Do not attempt to travel tis road if it is wet.
It is a long way between help places, so you must be totally self reliant.
I strongly suggest you buy a PLB for this trip.

MARYAN, I have no problem with caps locks on. Certainly helps with my eyesight when I cant find my glasses :) Hope you get to enjoy the Great Central Road.

A good friend went from Laverton to Alice Springs, in late September 2015
He said that it was very hot, but he has lived in Bunbury in WA, for a few years now, which does not really get that hot

We traveled the GCR from Laverton to the NT , in August this year , we got our permit from the Visitors Centre in Laverton, it was just a matter of walking in and asking for one , I believe you can do the same at Yulara , you can apply on line the permit is free.
We had no problems with fuel range , std tank 76 lts in the Dmax was plenty towing the Tvan , we topped up diesel at all the Roadhouses.
It was a easy 3 day 2 night drive , it says on the permit you can only camp at designated sites but we were told when we got the permit we could camp anywhere , just don't go to far off the road .
We were told at Laverton the WA section of the road is usually the best , it's regularly graded but the NT section is only graded twice a year the graders were working in the NT and it was just as good .

We travelled this road September 2016. Road was well graded in NT & WA. Camp spots are limited between Yulara & Docker River. Expect to pay a premium for fuel. $ 2.40 litre for diesel at one outlet. Free condoms in one of the public toilets.
