The race that stops a nation, huh, a national disgrace would come closer to describing the event, what must the rest of the world think of the antics of these idiots.

We have been in Bendigo for the last week,.
Our son who lives just down the road at Wood End said hey!! Mum and Dad why don't I take you both to Flemington to see the Cup.
No way said I, as I do not want to be anywhere near that place on Tuesday 1st .
Good decision I reckon.
Yes it was a shame that this sort of coverage is beamed around the world by the social media and other main stream media.
Putting all that aside it appeared to have been a great success with the major purse of the $$$$ staying in Australia.
WOW!!! another 100 to one winner in today's Oaks.

You don't have to go to the Melbourne Cup to see this type of behavior these days. I used to go to the Cup every year, back in the day.

I must be the only one in Oz that has never had any interest in either the Melbourne Cup or the Gay Mardi Gras but I guess thats just me.

I'd like to go to both, but an expensive proposition when you live in WA. But we didn't get left out over here. Melbourne Cup race was shown on the big TV screen at the Ascot racecourse in Perth and we still turfed rubbish around the place and got into to fights with one guy getting a "coward punch" and ending up in a critical condition in the states critical trauma care centre.
We just cant handle our booze - its cool to be totally drunk it seems and either scrap or make a fool of yourself ..........

Perhaps they should let us Grey Nomads free camp there, on the understanding that we will put the rubbish in the bins
Also if they let us place our bets for up to two hours after the race, (we would have been busy before and during the race, picking up rubbish), that would be a bonus for us

Gday...
Correct - unfortunately.
ANY large/major sporting event is pretty much the same.
Then of course every Saturday night in Melb/Syd/Brisvegas etc etc.
Check our New Year's Eve gatherings with the fireworks etc ... same again.
They don't allow it now ... but even the revered and holy Greens Lake looked much the same after the New Year's Eve 'party'.
Cheers - John

Very true HB.
The Birdsville races springs to mind. The difference being . . . . . . . It lasts 3-4 days not just one.

Bloody disgrace. Good Australians should be horrified at this behavior. We keep away from these fool things.

Given that a horse had to be put down on the track on that race and that, I am informed, approximately 200 horses die each year at Aussie tracks just to provide us with enjoyment, maybe we should call Melbourne Cup day the Day of the Dead. Sort of goes with the behaviour if these folk at the track. Just my thoughts which I know will not be taken well.... cheers all

We attended the Cup this year. It was a bucket list item. The event was well run. We stood near a waste bin that was replaced with an empty one during the day. The majority of the 97,000 people there were well behaved. Noticed that these photos are taken well after the races have finished and the vast majority of the people have left the race course.

No matter how many staff you put on, people will still be lazy pigs. You pick up after 1, 3 more toss rubbish down. And they block your access........ either to be pricks, because they are drunk, or because they are arrogant tossers.

Nope. Neither interest me. I've worked at horse races & dog races, and can't see the attraction of them as entertainment, and the Mardi Gras has zero interest.
