Dairy: Your local corner store, much like a newsagent or milk bar.
Bach: (pronounced batch) is a holiday home, normally near a lake, beach or river.
Jandals: Flip flops or thongs, definitely not roman sandals.
Beaut: Awesome, or that something is amazing!
Scroggin: Pretty much the same as Trail Mix, except you must not forget the Pineapple Lumps.
Munted: Buggered or something thats broken.
Togs: For use when you go swimming, call them your swimming gear or trunks. Just dont go too far away from the beach.
Hot chips: Literally deep fried hot potato chips served with Tomato sauce (Ketchup).
Heaps: A lot of something, or too much of something.
Dodgy: Unsafe or not trustworthy.
Chook: An old Hen (female chicken), often referred to older females who you dislike.
Eh?: Sorry what do you mean? Pardon?
Ay?: Just like saying aye, but with a rise at the end. Kiwis are a very unsure bunch and this really means Are you sure thats okay?
Ta: Sweet as, or thank you I really appreciate what you have done.
Yeah, nah: Could be yes, could be no. If spoken, be very wary of this one, nobody really knows the answer to this one.
Dunny: A toilet or lavatory.
Chocka: Something that is full.
Wop wops: Somewhere that is literally in the middle of nowhere, just like Palmerston North or Gore.
Durrie: A ciggie, or cigarette.
Cuzzie: Another way of saying cousin, but can be used for your friends No one really knows what this means any more.
Feijoa: A Beautiful fruit that is native to NZ, be careful, its an acquired taste.
Scull: When alcohol is around, it means drink your entire vessel of beer/wine as fast as you can.
Sweet as: Thats awesome, or cool.
Gumboots: Same as your wellingtons or rubber boots used on a farm.
Hokey pokey: A type of toffee, often used in ice cream.
Westie: A person who lives in West Auckland Often seen to be wearing singlets and sporting a mullet.
Crook: When talking about oneself: unwell, but if youre talking about another, usually means a criminal or unconvicted bank robber. Another interchangeable one that confuses the world.

Hi spida, not sure why you posted this NZ slang list complete with meanings on an Aussie forum when at least half of the terms are commonly used in both countries. There are definitely words on here that are unique to NZ like dairy (corner shop), scroggin, jandals, wop wops, munted, cuzzie. bach but unless your publishing the list for visitors from the US or Europe most of the other meanings aren't really necessary. Although I will have to be careful the next time that I cross the ditch that I don't call a redhead in Auckland a jaffa. You forgot to add those other 2 famous kiwi words to your list like Holden and Vegemite - sorry justavinadigmate.

Charnce and chunch too . Block and section . Pertaining to land . Each State in Aus has its differences too . Potato fritters are scholops in NSW . A glass of beer is a middy or schooner in NSW ..

It's no surprise that the states have some subtle differences in language as we all developed separately as self governing British colonies at least up until federation on the 1st of January 1901. It wasn't that many years ago that you couldn't even catch a train interstate without having to change over to a different gauge. To make things less confusing I suggest that NSW terminology should now be adopted Australia wide and probably even across the ditch due to the fact that we were here first (just kidding). By the way Aus-kiwi you forgot to add a pony and a pint to your glass sizes i.e. 7oz (pony), 10oz (middy), 15oz (schooner) and 20oz (pint) these went nicely with the 9 and 18 gallon kegs. There was a pub back in 1980 in South Hedland (Walkabout I think) that kept a few schooner glasses under the bar because they got sick of the NSW visitors asking for one - we would drop in there for a schooie or 2 whenever we travelled up from Dampier to do some shopping. Although when living in the north west it was easier to buy jugs when you were in a shout.

I do agree I really didn't see the point of the thread.
One was not fully explained 31 they also use wellies boots for restraining sheep when they are behind them.

Hey Spida, don't take it to heart you must be getting used to us Aussies having a go at you it's not as if you guys don't give it back to us .. usually with interest. Don't forget NZ like all the Aussie states (except WA) were actually part of the British colony of NSW. In 1841 NSW decided that we would have to cut you kiwis adrift because you had developed this really strange accent. Don't feel bad though because we had been progressively getting rid of all the other colonies particularly as they became more and more unfamiliar with the proper use of the Aussie language.. Luckily each time our forefathers always managed to keep the best bit until in the end NSW became the premier state that it is now. That's my view of history anyhow you Taswegians, crow eaters, cane toads, Mexicans and Kiwis might want to interpret it a little bit differently. Just trying to work out now if there is a way that we could possibly dump Sydney maybe make it the capital of Norfolk Island or something.
