Just a brief intro: My wife June and I are recently retired (although I still claim to be only semi-retired!) and now looking forward to some road travelling adventures. We are very much wet-behind-the-ears newbies having never owned a van before. We did a fair bit of research on various vans and options over time and recently went along to the Melbourne Leisurefest where we purchased a Billabong 16' "Matilda" single axle. Got a really good deal with a "show only" factory direct price and the van is scheduled for delivery Feb '17. Meanwhile I'm on a steep learning curve soaking up as much info and tips as possible, plus we're fortunate to have guidance from some good friends who are experienced caravaners. I have towed and maneuvered a fairly large boat for number of years, and although the van will have different dynamics I hope that experience will come in useful!
Anyway, we're looking forward to it very much, our first trips will be short ones starting in the autumn, then we hope to become more adventurous over time. Our very well behaved 8y/o Maltese travels everywhere with with us, so the dog/pet friendly parks will be the ones getting our business.
Also looking forward to sharing on the forum, seems like a great place to hang out with like minded people!
Cheers,
Tony.

Hello SouthernComfort
Welcome to the forum from me also
As you say that you have some good friends who are experienced caravanner's, and that you have towed a large boat, then you are just about there, and will soon pick up the art of caravan towing
Listen to their advice, and never be afraid to ask questions, from them, or here on this forum
I hope that you have many safe and happy road trips ahead of you
