If your A/C is a usual caravan rooftop unit then most of them can be run with a Honda Eu20i. That genny is an inverter style which is quiet compared to worksite gennies.
It will pay to find someone that has one and try it out.
Hints:
you will only be able to run the A/C on it's own and nothing else with that genny
keep the power lead as short as possible and make sure it is genuine 15amp flex.

Our original van was smaller & no aircon , when we decided to upscale , I wanted a dual axle 17', no air.
Ministry of finance insisted th 16'9" was better & as in th 2yrs we had th other van I had not gotten round to fitting air.
Let's get one with air in it . She won . Our genny is a cheapy , we are just getting the hang of all these thingy's.
With only 200kg payload , I have to watch weight & space.

The original post lacks a certain amount of information.
What size aircon? How much power does it require? How long do you want to run it? (Tank size).
Honda 20i is a popular choice. Best to avoid green shed genies as they are not up to "noise standards " expected by fellow campers.

Hello theolis,, firstly, welcome. We bought a jennie 2years ago and travel full time. We used it 1 to 2hours a day every 3or 4 days maybe for about 6 weeks. Has sat in back of car since. I prefer when it is very cold or very hot to use a caravan park Or show grounds. Then can run air con. Or heater when i want. From memory and i am not positive but think we used 1 litre fuel per hour. can anyone confirm how much they use? Anyway, we have solar to run tv and lights and gas to run hot water, fridge n stove. Everyone has different uses so Good luck.

Welcome to the gang Anne, enjoy here and out in the playground.
I have a Ibis3 aircon and use my Honda 20i to run it if not hooked into 240v. Runs well but as KFC mentioned, you can only use the aircon, no other 240v major appliance, it works gene too hard and she chucks the towel in. As Rocket mentioned gene loves the jungle juice when running the aircon but she backs off the juice if using for just topping up the batteries for example. I will add that I haven't had her out of the back of the Collie for at least 6 months to give her a proper run. Wouldn't travel without her though and I tell you that for free.

Welcome Theolis for the same reason as you I was doing some research on this subject on the caravanners forum. The feedback on that site was that the Honda Eu20i was fine for running the Ibis roof top air conditioners providing that they had the soft start feature (post 2008). As Dougwe pointed out the consensus was also that you would need something bigger if you wanted to run any of your other 240V appliances at the same time. There were people who had difficulty running certain brands/models with this size Honda but I didn't take much notice of which brands they were as I knew ours would be the Ibis 3.

I inherited a Honda Eu20i Generator, when I purchased my second hand RV My roof top air conditioner is a Coleman Mach
My generator will work the air conditioner, with no other 240 volt appliances switched on
I was advised, and the few times I have used the generator, I follow this procedure
Start the generator with the economy switch OFF, (to allow the generator to reach high revs)
Start the (whatever 240 volt appliance you are using)
Switch the economy switch to ON, (to allow the revs to come down, lower the noise, and use less petrol)
The idea behind this procedure, is that most 240 volt appliances use more power on start up, than when running
This seems to work for me

How, Tony, I am not being a smart a..e but for mine and others info and might also help Anne with her question....how does your gene behave as it cuts off then soon after back on etc while the 'eco' switch is on ?? I usually need it off.
Just for further reference and taking in consideration that Anne is new here, this sort of question would be much better in the 'Techies' section.

Usual disclaimer that I do not have the same natural abilities, as a real scribe, and sometimes I can even confuse myself, after reading my own writing I can assure you that I would be one the last persons on this forum, to think that any of the long term members, were being a smarty pants
I have just double checked that what I had written was correct
It is the Honda Eu20i generator, (red on the side, and black at the ends)
What I called the economy switch, Honda call the Eco Throttle (see picture)
With the Eco Throttle OFF, my generator stays on high revs, regardless if it is being used, or not being used
After switching my air conditioner on (Coleman Mach is the only info I can see, as I have no paperwork for it), and leaving it on for a few minutes, I switch the Eco Throttle ON
Perhaps it is my brand of air conditioner, but when I switch the Eco Throttle ON, I can hear the revs drop by about 10 to 20% I will assume that the generator is now only supplying the amount of power which is being drawn from it
The picture shows the Eco Throttle ON, as after disconnection the 240 volt appliance, I like to let the generator idle for a few minutes before switching it off

Hi Theolis and welcome.
If you have an aircon fitted in the van stay at caravan parks at power sites. Otherwise, if free camping, get a inverter generator to suit your requirements for 240v power...everyone has different needs for 240v power. You can get a inverter generator to run the aircon and other 240v appliances or get a inverter generator just to run the aircon.

Yes we use both a generator and solar. and try to park as far away from others when we require to use the genie.
We were camped at Yunta in SA and a dick head started his generator up at 3 am. That is why I made a comment like that.

If your like me and only using your Gennie part time I can't seem to be able to justify the excessive price of the Honda that has a constant power output of 1.6 KVA ( not 2.0KVA as assumed by many )
So I bought an Atima that has a running capacity of 2.75KVA , slightly over the Honda, and for about a third of the price of the Honda.
Then not long after I bought mine from a local dealer/ importer I saw them in Supercheap rebadged as Blackhawk.
A friend bought one from Supercheap and the last I heard of him he was away up North and running it every day without any problems ( besides that you have Supercheap's Warranty on it )
Some others camping near him had the Honda-itis ( when they get too hot and fall over in 40+ temps ) and his was happily chugging away, some were quite disappointed with their Hondas as they'd bought on reputation of their invincibility (?)

From practical experience running my Coleman Mach air conditioner for 4 hours, with the Eco Throttle switch ON, I had no problems I was actually trying to charge my house battery through the built in SETEC power supply, and ran the air conditioner just because the generator was running Perhaps my air conditioner does not cycle off
But... From correspondence with Doug, and his explanation of his practical experience, of having the same type generator stall or stop when his air conditioner cycled off and then on again
I have now looked at the manual
On page 12 it says to have the Eco Throttle switch ON, to save fuel
But...But...It also says further down the same page
Eco Throttle system does not operate sufficiently if the electrical appliances requires the momentary electric power When high electrical load appliances is connected simultaneously, turn the Eco Throttle switch to the OFF position to reduce voltage change
I take the above to read that we should have the Eco Throttle switch OFF, when using high loads such as air conditioners which cycle on and off
I hope that this explanation may help to avoid any confusion

I have a Honda EU20i.
I dont have the manual with me at the moment but I am sure it says in there not to use the ECO switch if you sre using the attachment cable to directly charge a battery.
The dealer from where I bought mine also told me the same thing.
I have used mine to charge the extra battery in the wagon and it runs harder, a bit louder, and uses more fuel with the switch off.
I guess that is why it is called Eco Throttle :)
