Hi, this is my first post, and we are looking to join the ranks for the Grey Nomads at end of next year, so we are trying to suss out all things before hand that we can think of. In regards to digital media installation, we want to have the internet so we can skype etc and facebook etc, but I love my Foxtel, and as far as we can tell you can only get this through an Optus satellite and decoder box. I do not know anything about any of this hubby asked me to post it as he is on way to work. Can anyone advise what they use for this. Any advice greatly appreciated. Getting to be excited now and its 14 months away.....Sigh.

I am sure that those who have foxtel, will come along and explain how they do it
For Internet connection, we just have a prepaid Telstra USB type dongal, which we put into a laptop I am led to believe that others obtain Internet by using their phone to connect
Enjoy your planning, as I find that it is one third of the enjoyment
I found that this is a great forum, with friendly and helpful people, and when you ask specific questions, you will receive specific answers and plenty of ideas

Sat King then pay for Fox . We used our data rather than sat internet . Our country is WAY behind in this regard ! Optus as you may know haves phone package where you add a kit turning it into sat phone . But you'll find the calls expensive . We just paid extra for data through Telstra . Yes we stopped when we had coverage . W/A , SA coast was fine . Even Nallabore has solar towers for phone coverage . Just look out for towers then check signal.

And a welcome from me as well, Furball. My understanding is that to get Foxtel via satellite you have to have one of their IQ set top boxes that is installed in a permanent residence (house, apartment, etc) - they don't accommodate mobile installations. You are not supposed to move it from your home but people do take them when travelling and just connect a cable from a satellite dish into where the terrestrial cable is screwed in. Foxtel broadcasts from the same satellite(s) as the VAST TV service (Optus C1 & D3) so setting it up would be similar (not sure if the dish requires a different LNB, though). Hopefully a Forum member who does this can elaborate further.
As for internet, so far I haven't had any major problems with reception, although I haven't strayed too far from major highways or towns as yet. I have a wireless modem from Telstra which connects to all of my devices via WiFi and on a couple of occasions I've had to hook up my telescopic antenna which extends to just over 5 metres to get a good signal.
And those 14 months will pass quickly. I was in the planning stage for just on 3 years before finally climbing into the playground at the end of last year, and it now seems like a blur. If you have any questions, pick the most appropriate section and ask away - no question is too dumb or silly when you're starting out.

I had that months free sample a while ago. Didn't suit me though.
we watched 3 prog's. each on a different plan. Not viable.
three plans for three shows.
I just take movies.
and have a $12 a month HD service to NETFLIX while at home..
TV is rubbish, totally.
The adverts are the best part of it.
Yet to find a show worth watching apart from Tom Sellick police chief.
Apparently go the IQ 2 box not the 3.
That one has LOTS of problems according to the tech's.
The tech installer said most of them won't use the no 3 model as they always going back to it
People here will tell you the model no on LNB and they cheap enuff if you need to change it.

I assume you have Foxtel already, so you can also run it on three other devices as Foxtel Go.
I run mine through an Optus dongle on my laptop and as long as I have mobile coverage, I get to watch Foxtel and have Internet connection.

That's a hell of an expensive way to go. How much does Foxtel rip out of your expensive dongle per hour. I believe that the ABC iView will rip out 400 MB per hour.

Down load all the movies onto hard drive . Only issue with series like Vikings ? The Mrs watches the whole series in one night !! Sheesh . Fox will only supply sat box if you can't get cable .. Not sure about Optus ? But I'd say Vast would be competitive ..

Ah ha ha I haven't tried Foxtel go at all as I am still home and I can do Netflix on lappy also, but I get lazy and don't, just have foxtel on the tv on the wall. All MY requirements for this retirement plan, is 1. beer in fridge.. 2. Internet 3. Foxtel or whatever provider ....Other than than that that is my list in full. I am easy pleased. Looking forward to lots and lots and lots of happy hours and meeting up with ppl. Hubby is the quieter of the two of us. I am the social one that will have to go ad chat to ppl first. I saw someone on here is an ex RAAF avionics person, so is hubby... They meet up we'll never get a word in .....lol

Thank you Tony. So looking forward to it. Someone was suggesting last night that a motor home would be better and tow a little runabout eeek, put another thought into the head. Thought it would be more expensive than a caravan or 5th wheeler and van as opposed to a motor home. Now I have to hang out till end of the month for the caravan camping show... Ahhhhh...
