When we purchased our new caravan earlier this year, it came fitted with a NCE brand TV and Antenna.
I had never heard of it at the time, but it looked a nice TV, 24 inch, USB etc etc. Antenna is same brand, and Omni-directional which I wasn't convinced about.
Anyway, since then, we have done a few small trips, and recently a half lap of Aus. TV reception throughout the trip was hit and miss (to be expected) but the people we were travelling with had a 'normal' van antenna and they picked up a lot we couldn't.
Now we are back home where we get the normal 33 channels DTV and 5 radio with a normal external antenna on the house.
I fired up the NCE, and only get 24 channels! Must be the stupid antenna, right?
Wrong... I plugged in a 19 inch AWA TV about 3 years old, and it picked up all 33 channels! I guess it comes down to the quality of the tuner inside?
Also, when the NCE does get some channels, the picture is clear, but it sounds like the audio is being compressed or something. The audio is clear when talking, but sort of cuts out when there is low background noise if that make sense...
It is watchable, but very annoying. I have looked through the menu, but can't find any settings that would fix this.
Any one else got NCE TV??

I don't know of the NCE TV, but we have a cheapie TV in our family room area. This does not receive as many channels as the more better LG TV in the loungeroom. I noted that the cheapie doesn't pick up all the High Definition (HD) channels. It doesn't miss out on anything (not that there is much to look at anyway) because typically the TV channels transmit their shows on Standard Definition (SD) and also HD channels as well. I queried a friend about this and he confirmed that the cheaper TVs may not necessarily be able to pick up the newer HD transmissions. So check the programs which you can receive - you will probably find that you get all of them anyway - just not necessarlily in High Definition.
Regarding comparison of TV reception with your friends, Your Omni directional aerial probably has a lot less gain than a regular directional unit. With digital TV, you either get a picture or you don't. Analogue used to get crappy snowy ghosty pictures etc but digital it is there or it is not. Your Omni aerial probably doesn't have the gain of your friend's aerials and thus you miss out on picture. We were stopped near Remnark once and I put up my aerial. My friend gave me this unit (with Pre-amplifier as well) and we were able to get all 5 channels. Most people in the park at the time could only get SBS and ABC.

Took the OMNI off our new van, threw it in the garbage and replaced it. Have a friend who is an antenna installer. Can't remember which is which but towers in the country and city are different, one if vertical and the other is horizontal. The OMNI will only pick up city towers.

The aerial I have is interesting, in that instead of having director elements (the bars fixed to the main beam), it has small loops. This way, it can pick up vertical polarisation signals as well as horizontal ones. Not all areas in the country use vertical polarisation. My aerial has large reflector panels which attach to the rear of the main beam. In areas of strong signals, I don't use the reflectors because it tends to overdrive the signals in the TV ( I cannot cancel the masthead amplifier with this rig).
Some areas (including Wagga, I think) even use VHF instead of UHF transmission. It is confusing.

Lynda, what you are talking about has nothing to do with city or country ore even omni. You are talking of the effects of the polarisation of the antenna (vertical or horizontal.) You will find stations in both the city and country that transmit both. In Canberra and other places you will find mixed polarisation, VHF channels are transmitters vertical and the UHF is transmitted horizontal.
Vertical and horizontal polarised antennas describe the orientation of the receiving elements with simple antennas. Most of the wind up antennas have the long element horizontal so they are horizontally polarised antennas. If your friend knows what he is doing and you have a new wind up model he will have fitted this one. It is a complex antenna that is both horizontally and vertically polarised. Its complex arrangement receives both VHF and UHF.

I then emailed them through the "sales" address, and funnily enough that was ok...
Still waiting on a reply, and will update IF I get one.

Antennas we read a lot about them on forums and quite rightly so tv reception is important,in our old van we just had the plastic T/bar cheapie happy wanderer and we had good reception 90 percent of the time,with the new van it comes standard with the antenna Teik (older style winguard copy) everywhere so far over the last 12 months perfect per formance go figure?
I expected to have problems with this antenna and I carry the new H/W phased array around just in case but have never needed to put it up yet.
I have the hole in the wall and external brackets all set up for the new antenna so the key to this tv reception business is be prepared carry a modern hi tek spare and your old aerial will work well

I have a cheap Big W TV, running on 12 volt Using an aerial, (Happy Wanderer or Winegard) it was OK in built up areas with horizontal signals, no good away from the towns Using a sat dish I receive the full range of TV stations, everywhere

I have the NCE led 24M 12v/240v (with dvd). Get all channels (Shepparton, Vic), good reception and sound. Antenna is a basic plastic T-bar about 2m above van. All coax cables must be tight and secure.

I have just received an email from NCE (or one of their agents), and the response was better than expected.
He said they can not do anything about the tuner sensitivity, but the sound problem has a fix.
They are sending me out a usb stick with an update file on it, so I can plug into tele and this will apparently sort it out.
So if anyone else if having a problem with wierd sound on an NCE, it can be fixed!
My TV does not have a built in DVD, it uses the Radio/DVD single din built in to the cupboard. TV Model No. NCE24TVLED24X50

Works a treat! Great sound now, and also 12 more channels!? Maybe that was a coincidence?
Seems to be it always pays to contact the manufacturer or agent in Aus that sells them.

Just want to clear up a few points here. Please don't think that buying a more expensive TV will give you better reception, it probably wont. A large TV is manufactured with the belief that its in the front room and you have a good antenna system. Portables are more forgiving with usually more front end gain. Sure quality can give you better sound and picture but not always. Years past LG almost cornered the market on plasma TV. You would read that this brand was better than that brand and smile, they were all LG inside the box. Antenna amplifiers! avoid those. Try everything else first and only use them if forced to do so. ( They tend to knock the bandwidth and make the picture flatter). Treat the antenna cable with care, no hard bends, nice big roll is best. Never ever stint on price for cable, its not that costly for the best so have it. The brand of TV to buy, check them out. My choice and taste is not the same as yours. Most TV parts are made in China, the tuner of many brands is much the same if not identical. The signal in one spot can be hugely different to the signal 2 meters away. There is a street in the borders in UK with antennas mounted on a short poles in the back garden, strange but true. So if you expect to have everything to conform to the higher the better, you may just get it wrong.
A personal opinion here is do not buy a TV /DVD combo. The big problem is the DVD mechanism is usually not that great. They use the same micro and if the DVD fails the micro goes into protect mode and the system is dead. Its so common its not funny. get a cheap DVD $30 or so.
Last don't judge a TV by saying the one in the front room gets more channels than the one in the bedroom next door. Its a different antenna point. You may be correct, or it may be your antenna splitter is stuffed. Rob
