Our caravan registration will be up for renewal in December but we will be away in the van from start of November. ( Caravan is new and will be 1 year old December) How can I pay my renewal if I do not have the renewal notice in my hands ? Also is a new caravan like a new car and no inspection is required for the first 3 years ?

Hi Barry. It depends which State of Territory you live in.
The best thing you can do is phone up your Dept of Transport office and ask them. Many still will not send you an email invoice, but will accept payment on-line. WA is like that - still a snail mail bill but I am registered on their data base and can pay them directly on-line with my debt or credit card. I don't actually need my mailed bill to pay, if I'm away from home. I just need to know the last day of payment and how much it is for the period of time I intend to re-licence the van (3mnths/6mnths/12mnths).
As far as inspections go - welcome to the 3 tier govt system we have in Aust which keeps millions employed as public servants and they all write and enforce their own rules and regulations. In WA, no inspection is required ever, unless you allow it to become unregistered for a period of time or a man in a uniform directs you it must go over the "pits". Other States require an inspection every year.
Best have a talk and find out the "good oil" from your Dept of Transport on all your questions.

If you are in NSW you can pay it on the RMS site. You don't need to have an inspection done either also you can pay it early as well.
Hi Barry, I am in Vic and had a similar problem a couple of months ago. I never even had a renewal at that point.
I went in to the Dandenong branch and paid ahead of time. I was ok and valid on the due date.

All the states should do it like tassie does. I can re-register my car and caravan on line with payment done on line as well. Much easier when away from home as we have been for the past 5 years.

In NSW we may have to arrange a vehicle inspection for some vehicles and arrange our own third party persons insurance (green slip.) When we have the vehicle inspected the authorised inspection station sends the result over the net, you just have to ask how quickly they intend to do that. The green slip people send their notification to the motor registry via the net as well.
Just allow sufficient time for those to get the registry and then you go on line with your vehicle and credit card details in hand. When you complete the transaction you get a receipt number to write on your registration papers. You don't need to have received them, you just need your number plate number, write the number on the papers when you receive them later.
