When crossing on the ferry how do you keep your fridge going in the caravan ???. Apparently you can't use gas & there's no power available so what's the answer.

That would be another reason to have a 12 v only fridge .
However I would imagine that because you are not opening and closing the fridge door during the trip all should stay good during the crossing, but I have not done the trip so I will leave it up to those who have.

on the scheme of things there is very little you can have in your fridge because of quaritine, so you just as well empty and turn off, they will check

Hi all;
We have traveled over to Tassie 3 times now and have booked in to go over for xmas ( yeah !! ) As for the fridge they will have a quick look to see if you have any fruit/veg. Plants are also a big no no. If left alone the fridge hopefully will still be cold on your arrival. Just turn your fridge off and don't worry about it. Other than that you could also go and buy a 12/240 volt fridge and use that
As for the quarantine people, they will check every thing, I've been asked to open the bonnet of the 4x4 ( ??) boot of the caravan and have a look at the fridge, not a problem as you know they are only there to do there job.
Gas bottles other than what was supplied with the caravan, petrol and even out board motor petrol. Guns and ammunition are also high on the list of no no's.

You just turn off the fridge and forget about it until you get to Devonport. All will be ok. Frozen stays frozen & cold stays cold. I didn't even switch it to 12v - no need. All other things said in the posts are relevant re the fruit & vegs etc. Enjoy the trip.

One important issue here it to unplug your caravan from the car. Even if you have a fridge switch (which we now have), the motion of the ship will probably be enough to keep your 12V fridge still drawing power. You are only safe if you have a relay system which isolates the caravan except when the engine is running. They have very large jump starters to get you going again if you forget, but why rick damage to yuor battery or car electrical system if you don't need to.
Even during summer, the temperatures on the vehicle decks are not that high, so agree with above - keep the door closed and frozen will stay frozen, cold will stay cold.

Have been doing return crossings on the ferries for the past 8 years with the fridge turned off and never had a problem with fridge contents in freezer thoring or items in fridge part spoiling. We have a wireless fridge thermometer and the temperature only rises about 4 degrees over the duration of the crossing.

A 12 volt frig is the answer. Leave it on and forget about it Regarding the other items, guns, loose gas bottles etc, they are ok, just declare them and they will be carried in another part of the ship. You claim them on disembarking.
