Local businesses in Bingara are trying to see how much money campers are bringing into town. In most shops, there is a box to put you receipts in (not petrol though) if you are camping. Rather a clever idea we thought. Interesting to see the final outcome. There is one paid park and many freebies along the river. Lovely spot to take a break.

The town of Monto also has a collection box for campers receipts outside the tourist info centre.
Back to Bingara, the Roxy theatre is a great place for a movie if you are lucky enough to be there at the right time. The Bakery is also great.

Remember it not the Business who pay all the rates in the town to provide free camping it the locals and what benefit do they get out of it .

They get to have the business's survive, that in turn keeps the town existing, without them there would be no locals!

Small country town like Bingara , Windorah and Croydon in north Queensland need RV traveller to stay there , But towns like Bowen ,Cairns and Airlie Beach don't need us because they have tourist who have more money to spend than we have .

We were in Bingara 2 weeks ago , saw the sign posted in the Information window about collecting receipts so went into the Bakery and ordered up , no receipt or box to put it in even if I had one. Wasn't game to ask as it looked like she was having a bad day , so maybe all the shops are not doing this. As for the picture theatre and milk bar are both up for lease and were not open when we were there. Also one of the Pubs is up for sale their as well. Lots of houses for sale too maybe it's too late.

Good morning from Bingara.
This is an excerpt from the local paper last week. "While boxes are not entirely accurate, as many businesses do not give receipts, numbers have still been impressive. In the month of June dockets totalling $8688.90 were collected. In July the numbers dropped significantly to just about $5000.00. ...the council believes the drop of may be attributed to the colder weather."
Might I suggest that visitors who shop without dockets write the amount and where purchased on a slip of paper and pop it in the boxes at either the IGA, Butcher or Information Centre.
Just discussing this post, Ian assures me there was a box at the bakery.
Bingara is now my "base" since January when I bought a house here. The town is very friendly and welcoming and a great place to free camp along the river. We have actually gone down and camped for a few days when the need to "get out there" has taken hold..lol.
Hope to be back out on the road again in a week or so.
