My tyres on 100 series landcruiser (275-65-17) are almost up for renewal. I was thinking of replacing them with a new tyre that Maxxis have put out (980 AT), the tread pattern is very similar to BFG All Terrain which I have been using for many years. The Maxxis are about $75 a tyre cheaper (a good saving for an old pensioner ). Question is has anyone had them on their vehicle?
Also I was thinking about fitting 265-70-17 as that is the tyre size on the van. Any thoughts?
Cheers Owen.

Hi Owen,The only problem I see is That your footprint will be 10mm narrower and the diameter differential less than a mm.Personally,I would be fitting a tyre the same size as the one specified for your vehicle. When you have over a Hundred grand investment on the road the saving involved in not putting appropriate tyres on should not be considered .That's my reasoning.

Practically. The difference will be minimal.
And the advantage of ALL tyres being interchangable. More than makes up for it.
A lot would like that advantage. Equates to 2 x spares for each vehicle as long as hub centres the same.
You DID get Toyota hubs when ordering van. Didn't you??.
Oh. Maxxis have a good reputation too. even wear and otherwise.

Thanks for your input everyone.
I think I'll go with the Maxxis 980 the original size (275×65×17).
Yeah Macka the van has 17" 5 stud landcruiser rims, 2 spares
I also have 2 spares on the back of landcruiser (4 spares in total).
Cheers Owen.

Your wheels will still be interchangeable as long as you keep the same size wheel on the same axle.. e.g.265/70 on left and right rear for emergency as they are almost the same diameter as your others.

Thanks for that Patrol 03, I'll keep that in mind.
When the van tyres need replacing I'll put 275x65 on, the 2 spares have never been on the road.
Cheers Owen.

Hey.
I wonder how many. here and elsewhere. Do NOT rotate the spares with road wheels.
Talking to Tyre bloke other day. it's surprising how many cars have NEW treads with paint lines on them in spare bay
and road tyres being changed out as worn.
I always rotate mine every Oil change. (10k). ALL of them.

You're spot on Macka,
I do rotate tyres on the tug every 10 thousand but when it comes to the van, recon it's laziness.
I've got the van hooked up as we speak, off to Echuca tomorrow for a few days (it's only a couple of hours away).
When we get back if the weather is ok I'll maybe rotate the van tyres, see how we go.
Cheers Owen.

Hi guys.
As well as.rotating its a good idea to have tyres rotated on the rims as long as there not directional.
I did this with my last set of Cooper AT3s and got 73000 kms out of them and there was still over 2mill left.
Needless to say im on my second set of Coopers now...
