When the numbers are down the prices go up to keep them in business. (spread out the fixed costs over fewer visitors).
When the parks are full the prices go up because they can (sorry ..... supply & demand free market theory .. just like trickle down economics).

And Cupie.
The main reason most vans nowadays are fitted out for self contained living.
with a lot of older ones set that way too.
Panels. Battery's Water and shower/tut.
Pity the gov't don't let land holders out of town set up paddocks with grass, whatever .
with communal water supply. toilet block and maybe some power.
Like they do in UK at least.
a high percentage of us nowadays do NOT need, nor want.
Full van Park services.
But a plug and tap to top up would be nice.
A lot of pubs outside towns have right idea.
Park round the back. $5/10 P.N.
. Buy dinner. park free.

Behind pubs are good - we usually have a meal there - some don't even expect you to, just have a drink. But be careful at Deepwater Inn in NSW - we picked up a mouse infestation there - in the first day of trapping with these great little wooden traps we purchased, in 6 hours we bagged 42 mice!!! In total, we had about 103 mice through the van. Never got the food cupboards, luckily, but we set the traps every few nights, just to be sure they are gone!

Yep - Cupie - youre right. The worst are those that are in tourist areas, cities or by the ocean.
We have stayed in so many privately owned, and not associated with the chains like Big 4, and they have facilities just as good and clean (but no bouncy castles etc) and bigger sites and they charge realistic prices, like $20-25 pn and they don't look like theyre facing bankruptcy as a result. Many have great rates for a week or more stay and a number of them we were at came with free range eggs, free BBQ's, cakes etc.

When on our 5 week holiday in March we decided to do it with the idea that since we saved for it we might do it with some comfort.
Joined Big 4 & Top Tourist with the idea of getting discount powered sites. Now they were charging between $34 to $38 per night powered,
even after the discount we soon found it cheaper and just as good if not better to stay in privately owned parks.
We don't care for ultra fancy and don't care if the ammenities are dated and old, as long as what's in them work.
Interesting was when at Mackay at a privately owned park on the beach charging $28 p/n and while talking with the owner he was telling us
they are about to join the Big 4 group, so, going by the B4 pricing this site will cost $38 p/n when the deal is through.
We do free camp sometimes also but will prefer to support the independent/private parks now rather than the group parks and won't be renewing any memberships.
Gday...
cheers - John
