It is an optical illusion - there is something in the picture other than a brick wall

I will put the 'answer' here in a couple of days - it has to do with the greyish blob in the centre in the mortar. Once you see it you will never see the plain brick wall again.

Seriously, I'm stumped.

Both photos appear identical to me - I've tried the one-eye trick, blinking rapidly, focusing just to the sides to see if my peripheral vision can spot it ... no luck. Please put me out of my misery

there is a cigar sticking out of the wall. Grey blob is the end, the rest is the mortar to the right of it. I have darkened it and lightened the wall in the attached photo.

Ex Yachtie.
Put eyes out of focus and scan horizon. you see everything.
Same as hunting and looking for moving targets.
Works on these sorta things too
Gets brain out of general visual illusion which it locks on to.
Bloody good though, Got any more.
There used to be a series of these things going round decades ago.

Of course it is a real cigar, it is an illusion because at first glance(s) it looks like the mortar.
This is amazing. Once you find it you will always see it. If you get too frustrated PM me and I will whisper the answer :)
Yep, I used to enjoy them.
