We are looking at purchasing a Samsung 9.7 Galaxy S2 Tablet via Telstra Wireless. We intend to use it for our emails, internet and as a navigation aid with Hema map apps. Also to connect to our laptop. Has anyone used this system or could help us with info.

Don't know the model, but be really sure it has GPS in it. Most Samsung products don't. Suggest you check its specs on-line rather than take the word of the salesperson

Hi B and G. Using one now. It been great but mine is a 10.1 and its, for me, more user friendly than the ipad. Though some will challenge that. I link it through my phone for internet data. We hapy windows 10 operating system on our notebook computer and the tablet is an android system which is fully compatable for wireless connectivity and tethering to both the phone and notebook computer. (My wife called out what to write there so hope I translated it ok) Mine is a 16 gigabyte tablet with a built in microcard that expands to 32 gigs. (She told me to write that too) oh . It has a brilliant front and rear camera. Believe you can put hema onto it. Must try that. It has google maps which work well and it does connect to the satellites. So it does have GPS. It the 2012 model and still going strong. For me it has been great. Love it.

Oh. By the way. We use a Garman gps on the dashboard for navigation. Have tried each of the other main brands but the Garman is fantastic. it also has latitude and longitude features which make it so much more functional. So you can plot them in unlike our previous ones.

We just purchased the S2 Tab with wifi but no sim we also have the Hema app The tab connects to our house wifi but haven't tried on the road yet. In the process of trying to find a suitable wifi dongle that connects to an external antenna for remote areas.
Hema works well we also have wiki camps and a few other goodies running, it takes great photos and takes a 64 gb sd for additional storage means pleanty of space for vidoes as well. Got it from Good Guys look around they vary in price by up to $150 (check the internal memory as some are cheaper but have less memory)
Bit hard to find cases for them still.

Like Philw we use a Garmin GPS, I have twice downloaded Hema Maps (cost $29:99) couldn't work it properly got refund both times. Hema was a bit too complicated for me (if you're not going to far off the beaten track Garmin GPS will be all you need). I would recommend you download Wikicamps great app has GPS coordinates that you can put into Garmin.

Thanks all. Your input is appreciated. We look like taking up the SAMSUNG s2 TABLET with Telstra on a $60 month 9.5gb plan which includes the tablet. Hema and Oziexplorer looks ok. Will look for an external antenna for remote area reception. We use Wikicamps on our laptop (brilliant). As we will be doing a lot of travelling in the future this system will also replace our old home phone which will be redundant soon due to the NBN.

I have had a Galaxy for about 5yrs. Best thing since sliced bread. It died today. The first day of my trip. Gave away my Camps(6) book last trip because I was using Wiki Camps. Now I will have to rely on the GPS. Oh woe is me.

I use my Galaxy for everything , right now for typing this .
I personally won't bother buying another dedicated GPS as I take this in the car and run wiki and maps on it.
The GPS function works a treat .
I use velcro to mount it .

Hi Bryan, the Garmin GPS is about 6 years old now, still working great. It's a "Garmin nuvi". I had a Navman prior to that but I found the Garmin much better.

Try Osmand mapping there is a free app that works fine but we payed for the full version, it works fine off line and on our Samsung tablet with GPS.

Yep thats exactly what I use my tablet for . The iPhone will do it to with the built in app.
They even have the same dumb arse americanised voice that tells you what to do that the dedicated devices have .
I use the built in free app on both and find they work equally as well as the garmin nuvi I hhave in the draw that has **** itself .

Swoffer, I'll call may son. He can fix most things. My Nuvi screen cracked when I was in WA a long way from home. So I bought a new one. When I got home he replaced the screen and its a good as new. Its in reserve for when I do something stupid with the new one.
