Hi uall, I was thinking about fitting a winegard retrofit hv antenna to the van, have the older winegard at the moment. Have any of you fitted the retrofit thing, and if so is it worth doing? It costs around $300. (just to watch tv).
Cheers Owen.

I have a Saturn which is fitted to the Winegard crank up base. I saw on a NZ website that the base unit can be used for a satellite dish so had a look at their website.
Cheaper by heaps than any comparable unit here and UPS and DHL costs are very competitive. Since I already have the VAST receiver it looks like a good option for watching TV
Hi Owen,I have the old style Wineguard but have fitted an attachment to receive vertical signals..about 70 shekels ,also a Wingman to improve horizontal reception.Excellent results.Suggest you steer clear of aerials that are omnidirectional.I don't live for TV but must say I get better signals where other vans have mediocre reception in iffy areas.

Thank you all for your help, I appreciate that. Well I forgot to mention that the I hit a tree with the antenna in the raised position, broke the main shaft thing (repaired it with aluminum angle rivets and cable ties). It's probably stronger than new but doesn't look great, so went to my local caravan repairer, he gave me a good price on the retrofit thing so I've gone that way. Should be here Friday.
Thanks again. Owen.

Owen,
I fitted a Retro Kit on a Friends Motorhome, she was looking at the add on for vertical signals and the add on for horizontal signals costing a bit over $150 to her existing Winegard aerial, so purchased the HV Retro Kit at a caravan show about 3 years ago.
In my mind, its not as good as the older Wingard with the additional fittings, its more flimsy having only one pole and you have to do a mod (or at least I had to), to stop the HV aerial moving around in an arc on the roof, further more to me you cannot mount a mobile phone broomstick aerial for talk and data on top of it like with the older model.
I am not changing over on our van, and as yet have not purchased the addons as we have sat TV also, but prefer to watch local TV if we can.
Look at buying another AL tube may cost $30 for 4m, as they are reluctant to cut same, but they may have offcuts.
Peter

Do you use your phone or internet whilst out in the boon docks? If so, whilst you are in the process of upgradeing your TV antenna, add a short (3 to 6 dB) phone antenna to the top of the wind up mast. You will have to provide an entry through the roof for the cable as well.

Hi all, thought I'd let you know I fitted "retrofit winegard antenna " today. Works brilliantly, retuned tv and have all available stations in back yard under next door's huge trees (prior to retrofit only ch 31).
Cheers Owen.
