Stayed at the free camp beside the main road through town 1/5/16. Not a big area but in walking distance to the shops etc. Good clean toilets and free showers. Facilities cleaned around 7am this morning and it was a public holiday in Qld. Stay away from the big tall trees beside the creek if you don't like flying foxes. Not a big colony and they took off at dark. There is another free camp not far from there but only for self contained units as there are no facilities at that particular camp site. Didn't look at the show grounds but there were vans there that we could see from the road.

Passed the free camp beside the main road today to see that two of the big trees in the camp area where some of the flying foxed were have been cut down. Still clearing the area. Plenty of space at the other camp area though.

We are at Kilcoy - yes, the trees have been cut down and mulched, and that has been left with barriers around the piles. Takes up a fair bit of the camp area, exacerbated today by a burst pipe in the school grounds, with water running down into the camp onto the road, a bit messy. Great spot though, with fresh seafood for sale in the park at the front, and a walk to the shops, including a new IGA, on the Esk road. Nice people, travellers and some backpackers. Pretty quiet.

Camped here again last week and the mulch that Jules47 mentioned is gone so a bit more available space but it was full up. The flying foxes have moved into trees in the school grounds. Didn't go past the other free camp this time but it is a bigger area and away from the highway. Only for self contained though as no facilities.

Are you talking about Anzac Memorial Park on the highway as you come into town from the east?

PeterD - it is on the right had side coming from the East - at the bottom of the school oval. There is another day park across the road, not sure which one is Anzac Park.

Just googled it and yes it is Anzac Memorial Park. The other free camp area is in Seib Street also but instead of turning right off the highway when coming in from the east you turn left. Go past the day only area, skate board area and it is further down the street. No facilities at that one but if Anzac Memorial Park is full that is another option for camping.

As of yesterday this "camp site" (Anzac Memorial Park) will become a 20 hours only rest area. Why - because of people overstaying the previous designated time frame, overcrowding of area, bad behaviour. Other recommendations to council were - to close the shower facilities to discourage people from overstaying and to close the area for one day a week to allow maintenance and again to move over stayers on. Don't know if this part was passed or not.

Last week when we drove past, this camp area and the amenities block were closed because of the road works.

Drove past a couple weeks ago. The amenities block is still there. Didn't go in so don't know if the showers are still there to be used. Also the camp area is no more by the looks of it. There is a parking area but the back part of what was the free camp was chained off. Didn't check out the other free camping area. Someone who has stayed/tried to stay there may be able to update us. Thanks.
