Please check you oven installed in your caravan or motorhome.
If you have have SMEV electric hotplate and gas burner oven with a glass lid, be aware there are NO safety switches or interlocking devices to prevent the electric hotplate from operating when the glass lid is in the down position.

needs to be reported by owners of these units to ACCC - I understand that a safety switch is a legal requirement
Camec will then be forced to do a re-call and replace or modify

Gday...
This is the current official recall list couldnt find anything about the SMEV electric hotplate and gas burner oven with a glass lid.
would you believe it complies to the Australian Standards.
There is no requirement to have a safety device or inter-locking device to prevent the element from operating, this could be loop-hole if the appliance is installed in a caravan application.
This is now in the hands of Electrical Safety Vic, Gas Safety Vic, NSW - DFT, ACCC, CAMEC, the caravan manufacturer and the selling dealer, however the electrical Australian Standards does stat the product must be safe.
To be continued !!!!!

Jules
Whilst the caravan was unoccupied, 240V was connected to the caravan and unbeknown to me the electric hotplate knob was in the ON position, The glass top exploded showering the caravan in glass fragments, which is a non-compliance to the Australian Standards.
We only found out by chance......we are lucky the caravan did not catch alight, we could have loss in excess of $400,000 of caravan, vehicles and storage shed and contents.
To check if your hot plate is protected by a safety device or interlocking device to prevent the electric element from operating, proceed with the following.
Have 240v connected to the caravan and turned ON.
Place the lid covering the burners in the down position.
Turn ON the electric hotplate switch and observe if the "red light" comes ON, if "YES" the electric element must be operating and you have NO safety devices fitted.
Turn OFF immediately so you don't destroy the lid.
Please check you oven installed in your caravan or motorhome.
