Each year since i retired 8 years ago we have done a 3 to 4 month trip to another state and explored a portion of it, we live in the Blue Mountains NSW and as its comming up to winter which is when we normally go we are trying something different this year and we head off friday next week for four months having a look around Europe and arriving back second week of September.
One of my friends who has done several os trips and a significant number of caravan trips in oz reckons its amost as good but the people are not as friendly as the caravanners we meet travelling here I am sure he is right.
I will not be able to visit our forum while travelling so please keep some good topics for when I get back.
See you all in September think of me as you are sitting out at the free camp under the stars with a nice fire and other nomads having a plesant glass of red and a chat.

I hope you have a great trip AT and sure you will meet some nice people and see great things as you travel around.
I have never and will never have the want to go overseas. I hate flying and would not want to be stuck on a boat for more than a day at most. I love Australia so that will do me. That's just me.
Enjoy OS and keep safe at all times.

Having spent 4 years (got back 6 months ago) in our own truck in Europe and Asia we've probably got some useful advice for you. As far as keeping in touch goes, you can get a mobile SIM card with a reasonable data allowance pretty cheaply anywhere in the EU. PM me for further info as this is not of much help to most users of the forum.

Hi Bimobil79 and good morning.
I am also about to venture overseas for a 2 months, Austria is our first destination too see our son for 3 weeks then Armsterdam for a 2 weeks cruise around the Baltic sea then back to Hamburg where we board another boat to do the Norway coast.
There is others amongst us that do go wandering and any hints on phone and data would be appreciated.
We normally have purchased a Bob card in Austria but we found it a bit ordinary once away from home base Innsbruck.

Thanks all for the good wishes I have already booked our first short van trip for when we get back just to get the feeling of real aussie travel back in the blood, thanks bimobil for your kind offer but I have spent considerable time researching phone sims and ended up selecting Go sim without a data allocation,
Doug I never wanted to travel overseas either it held no interest for me when we can travel easily in the most fantastic country in the world, but its absolutely amazing the difference to that attitude that 4 young grandchildren who are over there for 2 years can have in regard to changing that line of thought

When travelling ,as a couple, in country Europe or country USA you will find people are every bit as friendly and helpful as any people you will come across whilst travelling in country areas of Australia.
People travelling in a groups overseas tend to interact and talk to each other in the group rather than with the "local" people and come away with a different outlook of the "locals" . It is often too confronting for a "local" to interact with a bunch of foreigners who have just spewed out of a coach armed with cameras etc..
Enjoy you trip and I know you will come back with a whole different outlook on O/S travel. Australia is good but it is not the "only".
