Thanks for that John it really killed my day (LOL). When on the mainland we do most of our weekly shop at Aldi whenever possible. Here in Tassie there is no Aldi. The stranglehold of Woolies and Coles is apparent in other areas as well as shopping. Like our weird pokie agreements, our shopping experiences are controlled by a faceless few.
There are more than just a few in Tassie that would welcome Aldi and some of the other big european organisations to our island home.

Well I could have been looking forward to this, however less than 1 k away coles r opening a new store tomorrow........that will do me just fine.......cant see any sense in driving an extra 10 k to do a bit of shopping

If you live in WA and have travelled and shopped for any length of time in the Eastern States, you realize how expensive supermarkets in WA are by comparasion and also the shelf stocking and so called fresh foods (veges etc) are poorer.
I have some doubts though as to the accuracy of the ABC report. We have two Aldi stores near to us and not listed at all in the press report and they are currently being fitted out inside as the outside, including carparks and grass have been ready for some time.
Also saying they are only opening 4 stores in the next few months when they have employed 45 store managers (presuming they are all meant for WA) seems weird.
I suspect there will be a lot more then 4 stores open in the next 4 months - and we will travel up to 20-30km for a weekly shop. The Aldi prices (and food quality) are so much better than our duopoly markets. We will use the big two only for things that Aldi don't have or a local top-up.
We don't feel any loyalty to them - they are in the market to make profit - as much as they can - not make friends

When we travel over East, Aldi is one of the first stores we visit, their quality and prices surpass the other big two here in the West by a mile.
While on the Murray in Cobram over xmas recently, we regularly drove to Shepparton Aldi 45klms away for a weekly shop.Well worth the effort IMO.

It's great news to hear about Aldi opening up here in the West, All I can say is not before time !!
WE are fed-up with buying so called Fresh fruit and Vege's, only to get them home and find they have gone rotten with-in a couple of days,
As Bruce & Bev have said, we have also experienced Aldi in the Eastern States and were amazed at the price difference.
The sooner they get established here the better, they will have no problem grabbing a big slice of the market, maybe then you will see Coles and Woolies shares go down like a brick,
I wonder if Aldi will also start a Shopper Docket, Fuel Voucher discount scheme as well ???
Another thing I hope They keep out of their Stores, are those Damn impersonal Teller machines, These things remind me of being pushed like " SHEEP THROUGH A DIP" what's wrong with a bit of friendly gossip, while the Girl behind the till counts and packs your stores for you, ?
I reckon a bit of good old time Personal Service, goes a long way to making a Store's Good name,
I've noticed a number of new Super Markets being built in the Southern Suburbs lately, although they have no names posted as yet, I bet they are Aldi Stores.

Whenever I get a soft suggestion from Woolworths staff to be corralled into the self serve area I always respond with, "Oh OK. Do I get my groceries any cheaper?"
The answer is always "No, sorry".
To which I respond, "OK, then how much do I get paid?"

So then I close the conversation with, "Well if I don't get paid, why would I want to do your job for you? You know if you don't want to have a job you can always just quit".
The backlash from customers and the loss of business was so severe at our local Coles that the self serve machines have been removed completely and 4 new checkouts installed. With the self serve machines in place there were queues of up to 30 shoppers at the one remaining 8 items or less counter which was blocking the entire checkout area. Much better now and youngsters have got to get a job somewhere. Of course half of all the checkouts (10 in total) are never staffed except for Saturday mornings.

I agree with Hylife. The self serve checkouts are not there for customer convenience, but to cut down on staff and wages bills - the easiest thing to control in any business.
I find it laughable when you so often see a long queue of people waiting to get at one of these machines, when there are 1-2 people at proper checkouts waiting to serve you.
I simply refuse to use them - and accept the downside that I may have to get in a line for a few minutes to get served by a checkout operator.
Apparently Woolworths did a large survey of customers last year and found out many hated the self service machines and are slowly getting rid of them in VIC and NSW and putting in more full service (that's humans) checkouts.
As far as packing your own goods at Aldi - its not a big deal. We simply put all the goods into the trundler as its scanned and then either pack them into bags in the area beyond the checkout area or wheel the cart down to the car and pack them there - this minor inconvenience is more than made up for with fresher veges, fruit, meat and lower prices.
As The Phantom says, it will be interesting when Lidl arrive - although no doubt us Westies wont see them for many years if they follow the way Aldi and Costco have operated.
