Hoping this is the correct place to ask .... please advise if I need to move it somewhere else.
We hope to take delivery of our first van late May and have started researching for our first big trip. (First trip will be 2 weeks to get the hang of it) Wondering if anyone has advice on a map making app or site as we would like to plot our travels & perhaps ad photos.

Gday Crane and welcome to the mob
I use an app on my iphone called wikicamps, its about $6 from the istore and doesnt take long to upload. If you have android I do believe there is a wiki for them as well. We are on a trip now from Adelaide to Perth (arrived Saturday after 3000Kms via Esperance). I used ONLY wikicamps for the planning, I use satellite view and could see clearly where to turn off and what the roads looked like.
As an add on I have tom tom GPS app as well (thats around $90) it can be used in conjunction with wikicamps. I have to say it has saved me a mile of pain and stress pouring over paper maps etc, if you download the full map set (within wikicamps) you can have a look even without mobile coverage.
Good luck, message me if you need further help.
Cheers

How, Phil old mate, was wondering where ya been. I think Crane is looking for a map to mark where he has been or is going. Could be wrong though. I use Wiki along with Camps Australia. My Garmin shows me the way (sometimes).
Maybe Frangipani will come along and advise as she has a map she marks as she goes.
Loaded on a tablet it will plot your travels as a Track. This can then be saved to a Track or route file for further use.
We still have a big Map of Australia (Paper ) at home that we fill in with our travels. It must be 30 years old by now. Covered in different coloured pens for different trips over the years.
We also have the Hema App on our tablet as well as the Hema GPS on the dash.

Hi Crane, We use an app from iTunes called PDF maps on the iPad, which is free and you can buy Hema Maps for different areas at a reasonable price, also down load free ones as well. You can also mark your route plus add photos and use satelite view when on the Internet. Bessie.

Thanks Phil C :) I was thinking of being able to plot the actual route and stops etc and save as a 'map' once we get back home. Will take a look at wikimaps.

The Hema Maps on the tablet or iPad will allow you to create a route you want to take, you can then add points of interest along the way.
When you arrive home you can then save your route as a track which you can reload on the map for future use.
The above is also available on Hema GPS

I maybe a bit late to get my oar in this water but I just discovered that Google Maps enables you to take a map and create your own routes and stops.
You are able to create different layers and add lines along roads to show your intended or actual route of travel.
This can then be saved and or shared with others giving them access to your own map version.
I am interested if anyone else has used this.
Regards Ken
