A member has queried this in a previous thread and I have replied accordingly to him. I thought I would start a new thread to advise RACV members of the new additional option for those towing larger vans/motorhomes. This obviously comes at an additional cost to your membership.
It is my understanding RACV Total Care membership WILL cover you and your van IF your van is under a certain length, width, height and weight etc. If your van/motorhome EXCEEDS any of these specifications then you need to purchase the "Tow Pack" in addition to your Total Care membership. This has only recently been introduced by RACV. I do not know what other motoring organisations have in this regard. By purchasing the additional Tow Pack option then RACV know that your van/motorhome etc is in the larger category and therefore may not be able to be moved/relocated by their standard means so they then know that they need to send an "external towing contractor "who will be capable of relocating your van/tug/motorhome as required.
So basically if your van is over the specifications for cover under the Total Care package ONLY and you require towing the chances are that the towing company sent to recover you will not have the capability to recover your caravan/tug/motorhome.

I too have invested in the RACV tow pack, I have a total of 6 policys with the RACV group, house, contents, 2 cars, my pajero ( 4x4 ) and our caravan Jayco 17.55.3 pop top. So alot and no discount on the cost of your membership if you have other policys. Never had a problem. I did find out through one of the forums about this little extra cost if or when you need to have your caravan towed be cause your tow unit had broken down. My pajero is 5 Mtrs long and the caravan fron the tow hitch to the bumper bar is 7 Mtrs and @ 7 mtrs it looks like the van is just outside there towing limit ??. Any way befor we traveled back over to tassie last year, ( the third trip over to the big apple ) we took out the extra cost of 'the tow pack'. Had to renew our membership last month, cost to cover all 2 cars and the pajero + total care ( the highest cover ) + the new tow pack = from memory about $350 and had to be payed on the due date. The cost of the extra tow pack was about $45.00. Haven't used it yet, but it's nice to know that if things do go pear shape and the pajero is now 20 years young with 218,000 Kms on the clock ........I know that I'll be covered.

The NRMA Roadside assistance has Premium care Plus that takes care of bigger Tugs and Vans.
IE. 4x4s and vans over 2 tonnes .
There words are .... Towing for heavy vehicles up to 10 Tonnes GVM Plus secondary/towed vehicle.

I realize this is a RACV topic, but just in case any RACQ members are reading this... beaware that RACQ Roadside assistance no longer tow vehicles over 3500 Kg, they'll attend as a breakdown service, BUT if the vehicle needs towing it's now at your expense.
I'm now wondering IF I can't join NMRA as a Premium Plus member, whilst being registered in Qld. Because this covers towing vehicles up to 10,000kg.

There are two reasons why one might take out a tow pack option even if you have the Total Care package.
1. If your van is over a certain dimension there are limits on what can be towed behind a normal tow truck. Excess dimensions are not included. Your car goes on top and the van goes behind. Combined they may be too much for a normal tow truck.
2. Your roadside assistance package is for your car/s, NOT your caravan. Consider this, your car is fine but your van breaks down, eg busted axel. Guess what? NO coverage, because your roadside service is for the car. If the car is towing at the time of the car breakdown, the van gets towed only because of the car coverage. If the car is fine and the van breaks down you pay because you have no van coverage.
Think of it like third party only insurance Vs comprehensive. Third party will cover the other guys car but not yours. Roadside service covers the car breakdown but not the caravan breakdown.

I was chatting to a fellow caravan owner yesterday
He told me that if the tug breaks down Im covered and tug and van will be towed.
But if the tug is involved in a accident only the tug will be towed,NOT the van.
Is this true, or is he just talking BS.

RACV Towing Pack is for BREAKDOWN service - so yes, if the vehicle breaks down it and the van will be towed.
If you are in an accident, then your vehicle's (or the van's) insurance comes into play.
It will depend on the insurance coverage you have on the vehicle and/or van ... if it doesn't stipulate that the van will be towed if the vehicle is in an accident then it won't.
I would suggest you read the insurance polices you have on the vehicle and the van.

Way back my Disco was towed by the Land Rover Assist policy and the NRMA arranged the van to be towed. I know that this is not an identical situation but it is possible it would apply in your case. I would not take the word of someone you met or from a forum. Go to the horses mouth and check with your motoring organisation.

The NRMA has three difference levels of assistance - see Roadside Assistance - click on the Select links at the bottom of each to see how much coverage you get in each.

Spot on Peter ... as I said "I would suggest you read the insurance polices you have on the vehicle and the van. if it doesn't stipulate that the van will be towed if the vehicle is in an accident then it won't."
The policy is "the horse's mouth" although a phone call should provide confirmation of the exact situation - dependent on the knowledge of the operator that answers.
But if it is not written in the policy document, their verbal confirmation is worthless.

We had an incident not long ago, where our accelerator wouldn't work, engine running ok - no acceleration. Called our insurance company, because I had the mistaken impression that we had roadside assistance with them. They don't do breakdown at all. Anyway, called the Fiat agent in town, they sent a guy out, long story short, we had to be towed into the next town's free camp, luckily for us the mechanic had gone to his office to order part.
But the tow truck was far too small - with the motorhome we needed a longer one - anyway, he produces these really nice shiny looking ramps - attaches winch, and starts to pull the motorhome up - as soon as the front wheels hit the ramp it bent slightly, as it went up - it put full weight on the ramps - they looked more like boomerangs by the time the starship was on board. He also towed our car trailer, and we drove the little car. What a day - $800!!!!!!! for the tow -60K!!
Part and fitting, we weren't charged for the callout, which is the company's policy.
So we are in the process of hooking up with NRMA, or RACV for breakdown cover.
