Look at SatPhoneSales, one of the advertisers with pull through ad at top of page.
We went with a Globalstar Satphone on a $20 plan per month, with Pivotel.
Calls are only charged to caller, not both parties, and as it has a mobile phone number, anyone calling pays their plan price to call.
Fine for emergency use, does drop out a bit in far north (20%) but more than enough coverage for emergency use which is why we bought it.

Before you settle on the sat phone take a look at the Spot device. We use the "Spot Connect" device and can't speak more highly of it for keeping friends and family in the loop, and it has the advantage of the "SOS" function to send that message to Canberra to activate the rescue system should you have a life threatening situation develop. Worth a look. The Spot3 device is the newest version.

If you think you will be going off the roads that other nomads use - both in your trip to the York and elsehere, its also an idea to consider a Personal Locater Beacon (PLB). These are the land based versions of the sea use ones and are very small - about the size of an over sized cigarette packet and light weight.
It will work anywhere in Australia and most camping stores sell them - we got ours from BCF and the cost was about $300. You then register it and you free through the Federal govt agency that looks after this.

We have a satphone, Inmarsat, Isatphone Pro. We use it for emergencies. Sure they are expensive to use but if there is an emergencies what is expensive? We have had ours on a prepaid plan but we are considering using it on a post paid plan. On one of our trips a friend broke a spring. We used the satphone to locate where they could buy one when they reached 'civilisation'. If you have an emergency you can always give your location from the phone, or your GPS. We've had ours for at least 5 years I would think. We think it cheap insurance.
