After long and tiresome meetings with the Surf Coast Shire we have had a win, the camp area along the Barwon River in Winchelsea Vic has been reopened for a 12 month trial period starting 1st April 2016, if you are traveling this way please take advantage of this great spot as we need to show a need for it to remain open.

Hi Ray - and thanks heaps for letting us know that great news. How about some more details - street/road name - what's there - length of stay - big rigs - how big an area - should do well if it ticks all the boxes - good luck with it.

Barwon Terrace, coming for Melbourne turn right, or from Colac turn left, it is on the left just pass the swimming pool. Suitable for self contained vans and motor homes with a max 48hr stay.Within walking distance, there are toilets, visitor info center and a great cafe

excellent work Ray Well done
you mention "self contained" is there a definition for this? I only ask because many different sites seem to have their own definition about just what it means. Some say to have an onboard shower and toilet and some say to contain all waste.

We've seen the definition of SELF CONTAINED meant as NO TENTS. Everywhere you go there's a different definition. A car & caravan are SELF CONTAINED in most peoples book.

thats a win alright ,we manage a vic park and see all the correspondence going back and forth , the parks are trying incredibly hard to stamp out free camps
we're travelling this great country and working as we go ,too young to retire . I dont want to get to an age where we are totally free and theres NO free camps left
great work .

Totally agree Mezza, if free camps are getting closed because of a campaign by parks, don't they realise they are creating a bigger problem. As technology makes self-sufficiency even easier people will just start ignoring "No camping signs" and park anyway especially out side the towns. Just because it's illegal doesn't mean the law is not broken.
