Hi Guys, Hope you are all out and about and enjoying Sunday, if not watching the Cricket.
Looking at travelling to Broome in October. Only have a month, but thought we could still do it. Maybe go up the coast stopping at Northanmpton (well just past there on the river at a free camp), then at Coral Bay. But thats as far as we have gotten in past, so need help at where to stop from there on up? We would probably want to stop at Broome for 2 weeks, then take our time traveling home again, maybe on a different route, or would it better to go back down coast? Sorry to ask, and hope I am not a pain, but any help and advice from all of you Gurus out there is as always invaluable and greatly appreciated.

John - fairly late in the season to be heading to Broome, the wet season is just around the corner. However, You will get there with a month, but you will travel long distances. Just up from Northampton is Hutt River Province, you can stay there for $5 night - get your passport stamped even.
Cliff Head is a nice place to stop, as well.
Lots of free camps along the way - has been a lot of money spent on free camps, apparently from mining royalties, good toilets and dump points.

if you are going up the coast try coming down the "inland" Gt Northern Highway plenty of places to free camp that way

Hi John. Jules is spot on with her advice. Hutt River Principality (have a look on google if youre not familiar with it) is a good place to stay. About a year ago they were up-grading their camping area to low cost and those with power and water and heaps of clean and well established free camping areas compliments of Main Roads WA

another nice place to stop is Gladstone Camp....only a couple of $$ but right on the beach. There are clean toilets there. only drawback when we were there late last year (2015) was the rough road from the main road ( we dont have an off road van and what we have is pretty low to the ground but we made it in and out with no probs )

at the end of July (2015) we went up to Broome via Cue and Karrijini. There were wild flowers out all the way and the weather was good. October is too late for them, but I'd still recommend go up North via inland and then come back via the coast. North of Mt Newman we stopped at a Free Camp (Mt Robinson). 80 mile beach is right on the coast and worth a day or 2.
There are several free camps on the coastal hwy - about 15ks inland from Walkaway is Ellendale Pool (was $5 per night), Just north of Greenhead is Billy Goat Bay, then there is Sandy Cape north of Jurien.
We used Wikicamps on our trip around AU and found it to be ever so helpful.

Check Recommendations for the "North West WA Warlu Way". If you have a month and you are going to stay in Broome for 2 weeks then you are going to do a lot of klms each day. We did Perth to Broome the Coastal Way and then back down the North West Highway taking in Tom Price, Newman and then down to the Wild Flower areas. (7000 klms over 6 weeks) As some one has mentioned "October" is not the best time and far too late for the wild flowers.
You should start at "Billy Goat Bay" the first stop out of Perth 250/300klm (free camp) if going up the Coastal Highway.

The road down to Gladstone is rough ,But not bad,we drove down in our failane and caravan last year,no worries,and a great place .

Be doing this trip soon .in a week or two . Good advice . Hell long way from Penrith NSW . "Can't get enough info" ..I guess the OP the same ? Cannot beat first hand experience ..

One of the best buys is the Camps Australia Wide book - Issue 8 is the current one, as well as buying Wikicamps for you Phone or Tablet - invaluable info in these books, you can plan a trip, step by step, camp by camp - just make sure to check weather and road reports as you go.

Thanks all. So much appreciate your advise. We are now thinking we may go a little earlier, in Sept, and come back mid Oct. Can't really go any earlier as its to celebrate a 60th and an Anniversary. We will google all the different spots. Have got Wikicamps on phone and tablet now. We will maybe go up and back on Coastal road, and leave the inland trip for next year (July) to see the wildflowers which sounds wonderful. Thx again.
